49ers Predicted To Trade for Superstar WR After Injuries to Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall, and Jauan Jennings

The San Francisco 49ers are heading into Thursday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams with a severely depleted offense. On Wednesday, the team ruled out receiver Jauan Jennings, who was sidelined by an ankle and a rib injury. With fellow wideout Ricky Pearsall also hurt and star Brandon Aiyuk already unavailable, the 49ers are scrambling for options, leading one analyst to suggest a blockbuster trade is needed now.

How Can the 49ers Solve Their Receiver Crisis?

The injuries to Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings only worsened the situation during San Francisco’s Week 4 loss to the Jaguars. Pearsall suffered a brutal hit to his right knee, resulting in a minor PCL injury, while Jennings took a heavy blow to his ribs during a two-point conversion attempt.

With Brandon Aiyuk already sidelined by a torn ACL, the 49ers’ receiving corps is dangerously thin, raising serious concerns about how the offense will perform in upcoming games. This problematic situation has fueled speculation that the team may need help outside the organization.

PFSN analyst Josh Weil addressed the recurring injury issues in San Francisco, highlighting the constant strain on the team’s depth. “Unfortunately, the injury bug seems to find its way to San Francisco year after year, constantly testing their depth,” Weil noted. “With Brandon Aiyuk out with a torn ACL, and with Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall among those questionable for their upcoming game, they could be severely handcuffed for an extremely important divisional game this week.”

Weil then explained why acquiring a superstar wide receiver like Chris Olave could be the perfect solution. “Fortifying this receiver room with a guy like Olave, who could very well be their top guy with everyone healthy, would make this team much more prepared for the ebbs and flows of the injuries that come up within the season for any team, but especially that of a team that can’t seem to get out of the way of having a lot of injuries year in and year out,” he said.

What Would a Trade for Chris Olave Mean?

According to Weil, Olave would represent an immediate upgrade for the 49ers. The move would give quarterback Mac Jones, who is starting in place of an injured Brock Purdy, a reliable and explosive target. Jones is set to make his third start in five games after leading San Francisco to wins in Weeks 2 and 3, though he battled a sprained knee after the narrow victory over Arizona.

Olave, a standout for the New Orleans Saints, has been mentioned frequently in trade talks. The Saints do not appear likely to extend his contract beyond its current deal, making a trade a logical next step. This season, he has recorded 185 yards and a touchdown on 26 receptions, providing the type of playmaking ability the 49ers desperately need to compensate for their depleted depth chart.

Weil predicts that Olave could become the 49ers’ “top guy” once the roster is fully healthy, stabilizing a receiver room repeatedly impacted by injuries, particularly in critical divisional matchups. With the Saints reportedly open to moving Olave, a trade could address San Francisco’s short-term crisis and provide a cornerstone for the offense’s future.

According to PFSN’s NFL Offense Impact metric, the 49ers have a 79.2 offensive rating, ranking 10th overall, and a 74.5 defensive rating, earning a C+ grade through Week 5. The offense has excelled in key situations, converting 48.7% of its third downs, the third-best rate in the NFL. Additionally, the offensive line has been solid, avoiding sacks on 3.3% of plays, the fifth-best mark in the league.

However, these numbers suggest that while San Francisco remains competitive, the injuries to key skill players could severely limit the team’s ability to sustain drives and score points against elite defenses. The 49ers will need all hands on deck to navigate this divisional showdown against the Rams before regrouping for their Week 6 matchup at Tampa Bay.
