Emma Raducanu faced difficult conditions at the Wuhan Open, where extreme heat and humidity have posed major challenges for players throughout the tournament. The Brit was forced to retire from her opening match against American Ann Li in concerning circumstances that highlighted the physical toll of the demanding conditions in China.
The 22-year-old’s withdrawal adds to growing concerns about player welfare during the grueling Asian swing of the tennis calendar.
What Happened in the Wuhan Open Match Between Emma Raducanu and Ann Li?
Raducanu’s first-round match at the Wuhan Open came to an abrupt end as she retired while trailing 6-1, 4-1 to Li. The British No. 1 began the match positively, breaking Li in the opening game and showing early intent. However, the American quickly found her rhythm and dominated the proceedings with superior ball-striking.
Li’s response was immediate and ruthless, reeling off six consecutive games to claim the first set in just 28 minutes. Raducanu struggled to match her opponent’s power and precision, hitting only three winners compared to Li’s 13 in the opening set. The Brit made numerous unforced errors and appeared to lose energy as the humid conditions began to take a toll.
The second set saw Raducanu’s condition worsen significantly. She double-faulted four times in her opening service game, gesturing to her box whether to continue. Despite surviving the opening game of the second set, Raducanu looked increasingly uncomfortable.
Li extended her lead to 4-1 in the second set, with Raducanu’s physical distress becoming more apparent. She appeared dizzy at times and visibly drained, taking a seat during changeovers and looking exhausted.
The medical team was eventually called to court, where Raducanu had her blood pressure and temperature checked as she contemplated whether she could continue. After a brief consultation with the trainer, she walked to the net and shook hands with Li, retiring from the match.

Li, set to face Ekaterina Alexandrova in the next round, showed concern for her opponent following the match. “I want to wish Emma a fast recovery. It looks like she wasn’t feeling good,” she said. “It was a tough match last time, so hopefully she feels better. I’m happy with my performance. I stayed pretty solid for the entire match.”
The Tough Asian Conditions Affecting Major Tournaments
The extreme conditions in Wuhan have been a major talking point throughout the tournament week. Temperatures reached close to 35°C with humidity levels above 60 percent, creating brutal playing conditions that have affected multiple players. World No. 2 Iga Świątek took to social media to highlight the oppressive heat before their matches began.
The demanding conditions have sparked criticism about the tournament calendar, with six-time Grand Slam champion Świątek recently describing the schedule as “overwhelming” and calling for greater protection for players.
The heat and humidity issues have not been limited to the women’s tour. The Shanghai Masters, taking place simultaneously, has also been severely affected by similar extreme conditions.

Defending champion Jannik Sinner was visibly distressed during his third-round clash with Tallon Griekspoor, eventually retiring after being unable to serve or move properly due to severe leg cramps. Novak Djokovic vomited during a changeover in his third-round match against Yannick Hanfmann but managed to secure a win, later describing the conditions as “brutal.”
