One of the most significant moments from last weekend’s games was after South Carolina Gamecocks fans demanded the firing of offensive coordinator Mike Shula. Under the coordinator, the Gamecocks’ offense managed only 224 total yards against Oklahoma in their 26-7 loss.
After the latest defeat dropped the Gamecocks to 3-4 on the year, they currently have a tough schedule coming up. With games against Alabama, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, the team is in danger of missing a bowl game under head coach Shane Beamer.
Mike Shula Breaks Silence Amid South Carolina Fans’ Protests
With a series of tough matchups coming up, the offensive coordinator finally broke his silence. This came after a mass protest from South Carolina fans demanded the offensive coordinator be fired. They take on Alabama this weekend at the Williams–Brice Stadium.
“We ask our players to have confidence, believe in themselves … If we ask that of our players, we have to do the same thing,” Shula spoke to the media ahead of this weekend’s clash with the Crimson Tide.

Earlier yesterday, on campus, a small number of South Carolina students protested. They marched across the campus, loudly demanding that the school “Fire Shula” as his offense continues to struggle this season.
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers was listed as a potential Heisman contender at the start of the year. However, the quarterback has fallen to a 45th-season rank under Shula’s offense. Sellers has thrown for 1134 yards and 5 TDs this season, averaging 162 yards per game.
Meanwhile, the entire offense has also struggled. According to PFSN’s CFB offense impact metric, the Gamecocks currently possess just the 61st-best offense in the country. This has led to mass protests on campus from Gamecock fans outside of games.
Beamer fired offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley earlier in the season, and the Gamecocks’ Offensive Line has struggled since. Against the Sooners, the line gave up six sacks. They also conceded thirteen penalties against LSU.
PFSN’s Team OL impact graded the Gamecocks’ offensive line with a D+. They currently rank 106th nationally. They come up against an Alabama Defensive Line that records sacks on at least 7.4% of attempted passing plays against them this season.

Shula has also struggled to get the Run Game going at South Carolina this season. Many have criticized him for continously running the ball down the middle. The Gamecocks have averaged 106 yards per game this season with 251 attempts.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t get into a good rhythm,” Shula answered when questioned about his team’s poor run game.
Following last weekend’s loss, their 0.048% chance of making the playoffs has likely dropped to zero. With their current record, they are also at risk of missing out on a bowl game entirely. However, the head coach isn’t the one in danger.
While Beamer isn’t on the hot seat yet, Shula has undoubtedly emerged as a prime target for fan frustration. The road ahead doesn’t get any easier, as the Gamecocks face an even more challenging test against some of the nation’s top teams in the coming weeks.
