According to a report from USA Today, before joining Boston College, O’Brien made around $2.2 million during his stint as an assistant at Alabama. He also made $5 million serving as a head coach at Penn State.
Because Boston College is a private school, there are no publicly available specifics on Bill O’Brien’s current contract, including its duration. However, it is estimated that he is earning around $5 million annually with the Eagles after taking over from NFL defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley in 2024.
This implies that if he signed a five-year deal, a buyout by Boston College would cost roughly $25 million. For context, Brian Kelly was recently bought out of his $54 million contract, though the final negotiated amount was reportedly reduced to $27 million.
The Boston College head coach had a promising start to life, making a bowl game in year one. He also had an upset victory over Florida State. Things looked like they had potential with the current head coach after the 2024 season.

All things considered, the Eagles put up a solid performance against the Fighting Irish. Coming into the game as massive underdogs, they kept it within a three-score game for most of the contest, even being within a score going into the half.
According to a statement from O’Brien himself, if Boston College makes the decision to fire the head coach, this could be the last time college football fans see him on the sidelines.
