After beginning the season 4-0, Mike Locksley has now gone six straight games without a win as Maryland’s head coach following their loss to Rutgers. The Terrapins are currently tied with Rutgers for the fewest wins in the Big Ten.
According to PFSN’s playoff meter, despite the strong start, Maryland is in serious danger of missing bowl contention. They are projected to finish the season 5-6 as they face Illinois, Michigan, and Michigan State over the next three weeks.

Calls Mount for Maryland to Fire Mike Locksley
Following Maryland’s 35-20 defeat to Rutgers, which dropped their record to 4-5, fans quickly began criticizing Locksley as the team’s struggles continued. Locksley has been at the helm for seven seasons, making him one of the longest-tenured coaches in the Big Ten.
Mike Locksley is now 39-73 all time as a head coach and 17-46 in Big 10 play. He’s in year 7 and just got blown out by a 4-5 Rutgers team. He is the worst coach in college football and has been for some time. He should never coach another game for the Terps, PLEASE.

Now in his seventh season, Locksley holds an overall record of 37-45 and a 17-44 record in Big Ten play. He led Maryland to three straight bowl wins from 2021 to 2023, but recent results have caused fans to turn on him.
I’ve been the biggest Mike Locksley defender in the world and I can’t anymore.
He needs to be gone tonight. Should’ve started the season out 7-0. Now we’re 4-5. Absolutely pathetic. https://t.co/3p0QoYmwFG

Despite the exaggerated claim that Locksley should have gone 7-0 this season, there are undeniably games that should have gone Maryland’s way. The Terrapins have lost three one-score games this year against Nebraska, Washington, and UCLA.
Hello @TerpsADJimSmith We love what you have done for the school. Got people in the seats for both football and basketball and have been the best AD we’ve ever had. But i have one request that terp nation will celebrate forever about.
Fire Mike Locksley.

“Hello @TerpsADJimSmith We love what you have done for the school. Got people in the seats for both football and basketball, and has been the best AD we’ve ever had. But i have one request that terp nation will celebrate forever about. Fire Mike Locksley,” one fan directed to the athletic director.
According to USA Today, his buyout would cost Maryland’s athletic director approximately $13 million if he were dismissed without cause in late 2025. This is the lowest buyout in the Big Ten; despite that, no move has been made so far.
It’s time to get rid of Mike Locksley. It’s year 7 and he is going backwards. I don’t care that he can recruit, he cant coach!

4th and 11, game/season/career on the line, and a false start. Perfectly sums up the Mike Locksley era. I was a defender of Locks until this season. Time to move on @TerpsADJimSmith and go get James Franklin before VT does

“4th and 11, game/season/career on the line, and a false start. Perfectly sums up the Mike Locksley era. I was a defender of Locks until this season. Time to move on and go get James Franklin before VT does,” another fan commented, calling for the former Penn State coach.
While it seems unlikely Maryland would hire Franklin, Locksley’s position appears increasingly precarious following tonight’s loss. Still, potential bowl eligibility could provide him with a chance to make his case with three games remaining this season.
