Just when it felt like the Atlantic Coast Conference was wide open just a few weeks ago, the conference has come down to six schools vying for an opportunity at the ACC Championship game in December.
With a four-way tie at the top and two teams on the outside looking in, let’s examine the odds and pathways each team will need to secure to reach the ACC Championship game.
What Do the ACC Championship Game Probabilities Reveal?
The ACC has been full of excitement as four teams sit with just one conference loss following Week 12 of the 2025 college football season.
Mathematically, six teams are technically eligible to make the conference championship game, depending on how the rest of the season plays out. Below is the percentage probability for the remaining teams to reach the ACC Championship Game.

Week 12 reshuffled the pack in the ACC, in a fashion. The Duke Blue Devils’ loss to the Virginia Cavaliers effectively ended Manny Diaz’s team’s momentum, and they need a minor miracle to reach the ACC Championship Game now, let alone win it.
The Miami Hurricanes overtook Duke as the “best of the rest contender.” However, Mario Cristobal’s team is very much on the outside looking in heading into Week 13.
The Pittsburgh Panthers played an out-of-conference tilt against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish that exposed some flaws that raise questions about their legitimacy to challenge at the top of the ACC, while SMU sat and watched the chaos unfold from the comfort of a bye week.
This leaves the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, who eventually defeated the Boston College Eagles despite being behind for large swathes of the game. Brent Key’s team remains the conference frontrunner, but it’s still all to play for.

How Does Every ACC Contender’s Road Map to December’s Championship Game Look?
Georgia Tech’s ACC Championship Road Map
As mentioned above, Georgia Tech handled its business against Boston College, just. That was the first of two in-conference obstacles to overcome in the race to the ACC Championship Game. The second comes in Week 13, against a Pitt side that will be out to prove itself after the defeat to Notre Dame.
The matchup against Pitt is set for fireworks and smash-mouth football, with both teams a part of the current four-team tie. With only two weeks between these two teams clashing, the anticipation is likely to begin very early for Georgia Tech, which is also hopeful its quarterback, Haynes King, will start to receive some Heisman love.

Virginia’s ACC Championship Road Map
Virginia rebounded from the Week 11 loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons by putting Duke to the sword in Week 12. The Cavaliers’ focus needs to be on their in-state rival, Virginia Tech, which could provide a boost to the team’s win percentage against common conference opponents if a tie were to occur.

Pittsburgh’s ACC Championship Road Map
Pittsburgh is its own key holder to the top of the ACC if it can defeat both Georgia Tech and Miami (FL). Aside from their mid-season back-to-back losses, the Panthers have been one of the hottest teams in college football that no one expected to be.
Behind freshman sensation Mason Heintschel, Pittsburgh is hopeful to come out of the ACC on top after finishing last season near the middle of the pack. Their two final games also allow them to eliminate both GT and Miami (FL) from contention for the ACC championship if they can secure wins.

SMU’s ACC Championship Road Map
SMU will be paying close attention to its ACC counterparts as the Mustangs were off this weekend with a bye. However, upon return, they will need to be on top of their game as they face the current No. 20-ranked Louisville Cardinals, a game that seems less daunting following the Cardinals’ loss to Clemson in Week 12.
If they can get past Louisville, all that is waiting for them is a final ACC showdown against the California Golden Bears, whom SMU can certainly get through. However, the matchup is not to be taken lightly, as the Mustangs will need to travel to Berkeley, CA, to conclude their regular season against the growing “Calgorithm” movement.

Duke’s ACC Championship Road Map
Although the Blue Devils lost to Virginia in Week 12, putting a dagger in their ACC Championship Game aspirations, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
The rivalry game with North Carolina should be a relatively comfortable affair for Duke, while hosting Wake Forest in the final weekend is preferable to heading to Winston-Salem. They need results elsewhere to work for them, but stranger things have happened in the ACC.
