When is Julian Sayin NFL Draft Eligible? Former Five-Star on First-Round Trajectory
Sayin is not eligible for the 2026 NFL Draft as a second-year player, but he projects as a potential Round 1 selection in the 2027 NFL Draft class, or beyond.
Though Sayin enrolled early at Alabama in 2023, before transferring to Ohio State in 2024, that early enrollment period does not count against Sayin’s eligibility, as it was not a full year incurred at the collegiate level. Officially, Sayin is a redshirt freshman, and will be eligible in 2027.
Sayin isn’t locked into any specific NFL Draft range at this stage, but his production as a first-year starter in 2025 has been extremely impressive.
As a redshirt freshman, Sayin has helped lead the Buckeyes to an undefeated regular season record, completing 258 of 327 pass attempts (78.9%) for 3,065 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just five interceptions.
The Buckeyes have given Sayin more than adequate support with wide receivers Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate — both of whom project as potential top-five selections in their respective classes — and the Buckeyes’ defense is also laden with future NFL talent.
Nevertheless, Sayin has shown in 2025 much of what made him such a compelling recruit out of Carlsbad, California. He’s a distributor first, who builds his game around pinpoint accuracy and sharp processing — a style that’s translatable on the biggest stage.
Julian Sayin’s NFL Draft Scouting Report
At a listed 6’1″, 208 pounds, Sayin isn’t powerfully built, and he doesn’t fit the prototypical NFL QB mold. He’s also not an explosive creator or running threat — factors that may dilute his stock a bit in the eyes of some evaluators.
Nevertheless, Sayin underpins his game with a select elite quality: His accuracy and precision. Sayin has a gift for placing passes optimally for his receivers at multiple levels.
In the short range, Sayin can reliably place passes for run-after-catch opportunities. In the intermediate range, he can effectively place passes to hit tight windows and play to his receiver’s leverage. And downfield, he has the touch and trajectory control to throw his man open and leave coverage defenders chasing ankles.
Sayin is a hyper-accurate distributor who gets the ball from Point A to Point B with incredible consistency, but lost within that accuracy is his quick and efficient processing inside the pocket.
Sayin has shown he can get get through his progressions quickly and recognize zone opportunities on the vertical plane. To that end, he’s also flashed the ability to look off deep safeties and clear seams for his targets, effectively manipulating spacing with his eyes.
The questions with Sayin come from his ultimate potential. His listed size puts him at close to average measureables for the QB position, and his real measurements may come in a bit smaller. There aren’t a ton of NFL QBs built like Sayin, and most average-sized QBs have superior athleticism and creation ability to compensate.
That’s not to say Sayin isn’t mobile; he is. But two-phase creation isn’t an overbearing strength of his, putting him in a similar bucket to Bryce Young.
Young was a bit smaller than Sayin, but similar disputes arose: He was accurate, a good distributor, but fit an unorthodox player type and didn’t quite have the tools to elevate. We’ve seen the highs and lows of that profile from Young in the NFL.
Nevertheless, there’s reason to believe Sayin could exceed that projection. As mentioned, he’s still bigger than the smallest passers, he’s extremely efficient in the quick game, and he has a good arm to pair with his unflinching accuracy and resolute mental acuity.
Sayin is not guaranteed to be a high first-round pick, but when Sayin is eligible for the NFL Draft in 2026 and beyond, he’ll assuredly be in the Round 1 conversation early on among evaluators, and with extended CFB Playoff success and another strong year in Columbus, he can manifest that Round 1 upside in due time.
