Christmas Day was supposed to offer clarity for the Minnesota Vikings. Instead, it delivered another twist in a season defined by uncertainty at quarterback. With playoff implications hanging over Week 17 and divisional pride on the line, Minnesota now enters its most crucial game without the player it hoped to evaluate most.
At 7-8, the Vikings’ long-term strategy was already under scrutiny. Now, a late injury has forced a crucial decision that could influence not just this game but also the direction of the franchise in the offseason.
JJ McCarthy Ruled Out, Max Brosmer Thrust Into Spotlight
NFL insider Ian Rapoport revealed the turning point. “Vikings QB JJ McCarthy, who underwent an MRI and other tests on his right, throwing hand, has suffered a hairline fracture and he’s out this week,” Rapoport reported. “Another frustrating injury.”

JJ McCarthy injured his throwing hand late in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants. Initial X-rays were negative, but further testing revealed a minor fracture caused when McCarthy’s hand struck the helmet of defensive end Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins.
While the Vikings do not believe surgery is necessary and have avoided placing him on injured reserve, the injury is severe enough to sideline him for Christmas Day. His availability for Week 18 against Green Bay remains uncertain.
The timing couldn’t be worse. Minnesota hoped these final two games, both against NFC North rivals, would provide meaningful data on McCarthy’s trajectory. Instead, the evaluation remains incomplete.
McCarthy’s availability has been a lingering concern since he was drafted No. 10 overall in 2024. He missed his entire rookie season with a torn meniscus, five games earlier this year due to a high ankle sprain, and another contest after entering concussion protocol following a hit against Green Bay. In two seasons, he has appeared in just nine of the Vikings’ last 32 regular-season games.
When it comes to performance on the field, the results have been a bit of a mixed bag for McCarthy. He’s thrown for 1,450 yards and racked up 11 touchdowns but also has 12 interceptions, all while posting a completion rate of 57.3 percent, the lowest among all qualified NFL quarterbacks this season.
O’Connell has consistently pointed out the need for McCarthy to refine his lower-body mechanics, a task that’s still very much a work in progress and has now hit another snag.
McCarthy is ranked 40th in the NFL in PFSN’s QB Impact Score through nine games, with a 61.8 grade. The Vikings are ranked 28th in offense with a 66.2 grade in PFSN’s Offense Impact metric.
Stepping into this challenging situation is Max Brosmer. He’s played in six games so far, completing 66 percent of his passes for 220 yards, but he’s also thrown four interceptions without a single touchdown. Minnesota will likely adopt a conservative game plan as Brosmer faces a Detroit team that’s vying for a spot in the postseason.
Looking beyond Thursday, the stakes are even higher. Minnesota has invested heavily in its 2025 roster and extended O’Connell and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, yet they haven’t won a playoff game since 2022. With questions about McCarthy’s health and consistency looming, the Vikings might start considering the option of bringing in a veteran quarterback this offseason as a backup plan.
For now, though, all eyes are on Brosmer. On Christmas Day, the Vikings won’t just be up against the Lions; they’ll be playing for some much-needed answers.
