There is always plenty of chatter in F1 during the winter break, but this time, 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has stepped forward with a blunt message. According to him, Max Verstappen is about to hold all the cards when it comes to the 2026 driver market.
Villeneuve bluntly admitted that other drivers and teams are unsure of their next moves until the Dutchman makes his intentions known, and that is a bold thing to say.
Jacques Villeneuve Believes Max Verstappen Holds the Power
Verstappen is a four-time world champion and one of the most successful racers of his generation, and for years now, he has been the benchmark in the sport. When people talk about greatness in modern F1, Verstappen’s name is always near the top of the list.
Right now, almost every team and driver is looking ahead to 2026 as the season will introduce sweeping changes to the cars, engines, and aerodynamics. It is a fresh start in many ways and a chance for teams to shake up the pecking order, and normally, that kind of reset would encourage bold moves in the driver market.
However, the 2026 grid may look almost identical to the one that finished the 2025 season, except for Yuki Tsunoda leaving the grid and Arvid Lindblad entering it. Villeneuve thinks the reason for the driver market being stagnant is that no one wants to commit until Verstappen does.
The Canadian said, “Max Verstappen has a one-year contract, so he’s waiting to see what happens. He’s the puppet master. He can go anywhere. Any team would be stupid not to take him.”
Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull through 2028, but speculation has grown as Red Bull has seen significant personnel changes, including Christian Horner’s departure, Adrian Newey’s move to Aston Martin, and Helmut Marko’s leaving the team.
These changes have naturally raised questions, as some wondered if Verstappen might use performance-related exit clauses and explore other options, but in the end, he said that he plans to stay with Red Bull at least through 2026.
If Red Bull struggles early in the season with their new Ford partnership, Verstappen could reconsider his future, and that could reshape the entire grid.
A Domino Waiting To Fall After Verstappen
One rumor being discussed is that Oscar Piastri could be in line for a Red Bull seat if Verstappen decides to leave, as Piastri came close to winning last year’s title and has shown the maturity needed to be a frontrunner.
And then some stories have linked McLaren with Charles Leclerc from Ferrari if Piastri ever decides to join another team. Leclerc is contracted with Ferrari until 2029, but has reportedly performance-based clauses, and if Ferrari stumbles in 2026, that could change the conversation again.
Mercedes is another name that keeps popping up, as Toto Wolff has always admired Verstappen. Midway through 2025, there were even whispers of talks before Verstappen ultimately decided to stay with Red Bull. If that conversation ever restarted, it would shake things up at Mercedes, and a Verstappen arrival would change the team dynamics instantly, possibly replacing George Russell.
Aston Martin remains in the mix too, as with a Honda engine partnership and Newey now designing cars there, many think it could become a tempting destination for the Dutchman. Rumors emerged late in 2025 of massive financial offers on the table for Verstappen, as Fernando Alonso has hinted at a possible retirement if the car is not competitive.
All of this comes at a time when the rules are about to change dramatically, and Villeneuve says this uncertainty is what makes the situation so fascinating. If Verstappen is happy, things may stay calm, but if he grows frustrated, one decision could send the market into chaos.
