The 2025 Wimbledon Championships are in full swing, with half of the first-round matches still underway on Tuesday, July 1, across both the men’s and women’s singles draws. Day Two of the prestigious grass-court Grand Slam has already brought some major shocks, as both the No. 3 seeds and the No. 7 seed in the men’s draw have been eliminated from the tournament. Let’s dive into the biggest upsets from Day 2 at Wimbledon 2025.
10 Shocking Upsets in First Round of Wimbledon 2025 Day 2
#10 Jessica Pegula
One of the biggest upsets in the first round of the women’s singles at Wimbledon saw 3rd seed Jessica Pegula of the United States eliminated by Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The 24-year-old Italian defeated Pegula in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

The 31-year-old American had her best performance at the grass-court Grand Slam in 2023, reaching the quarterfinals. There, Pegula faced Czech tennis pro Marketa Vondrousova and was defeated in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 4-6. Cocciaretto is now set to face American Katie Volynets in her second-round match on July 2.
#9 Lorenzo Musetti
Seventh seed Lorenzo Musetti suffered a surprising first-round exit on the men’s side, falling to Georgian tennis pro Nikoloz Basilashvili in a hard-fought four-set match. Musetti managed to take only the second set, with the final score reading 2-6, 6-4, 5-7, 1-6.

This is a disheartening exit for Musetti, especially considering he made it all the way to the semifinals at the All England Club just last year. There, he faced 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and fell in straight sets, 4-6, 6-7(2), 4-6. In the second round, Basilashvili will take on another Italian, Lorenzo Sonego, on Wednesday.
#8 Zheng Qinwen
2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Zheng Qinwen made a surprising early exit from the tournament after a tough three-set battle in her opening-round match. Although originally scheduled for day one, the match was played on July 1. The 5th seed in the women’s singles faced off against Czechia’s Kateřina Siniaková and was defeated in three sets, managing to take only the second set with a scoreline of 5-7, 6-4, 1-6.

The 22-year-old Chinese player had her best run at the Wimbledon Championships in 2022, reaching the third round, where she faced Elena Rybakina and lost in straight sets. Siniaková is now set to take on former World No.1 Naomi Osaka in a second-round clash on Wednesday.
#7 Karolina Muchova
The 15th seed, Karolina Muchova, suffered a first-round exit from Wimbledon 2025 on Day Two. The Czech tennis star faced China’s Wang Xinyu and was defeated in straight sets, 5-7, 2-6.
The 28-year-old Czech was unable to move past the round of 128 last year, falling to Spaniard Paula Badosa. Muchová’s best performances at the grass-court major came in 2019 and 2021, when she reached the quarterfinals and faced Elina Svitolina and Angelique Kerber, respectively. Xinyu will now face Turkish player Zeynep Sönmez in the second round.
#6 Marta Kostyuk
Another seeded player who suffered a shocking early exit from the Grass Court Slam was Marta Kostyuk. The 26th seed in the women’s singles event was upset in the first round by Veronika Erjavec. Despite taking the opening set, the Ukrainian couldn’t hold on, eventually falling to the Slovenian in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6.
In her career, Kostyuk has reached the round of 32 at Wimbledon twice but was defeated on both occasions by American Madison Keys, each time in straight sets. Erjavec will now face American Danielle Collins in the second round.
#5 Alexander Bublik
Russian-born Kazakh tennis professional Alexander Bublik made a shocking exit in the first round of the grass-court Slam. The 28th seed was defeated by Spain’s Jaume Munar in a five-set battle. Despite winning the second and third sets, Bublik couldn’t turn the tide and ultimately lost the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-7(5), 2-6.
In 2023, Bublik enjoyed his best run at the Wimbledon Championships, making it to the round of 16, where he faced Andrey Rublev. Meanwhile, Munar is set to take on Hungarian player Fábián Marozsán in the second round.
#4 Denis Shapovalov
Seeded No. 27 in the men’s singles draw, Denis Shapovalov made an early exit in the first round on July 1. The Canadian took the opening set against Argentina’s Mariano Navone but ultimately fell in four sets, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 4-6.
The 26-year-old had his best run at the grass-court Slam in 2021, reaching the semifinals against Novak Djokovic after getting past Andy Murray in the round of 32. Navone will face Spaniard Pedro Martínez in the second round.
#3 Alexander Zverev
Another top-seeded player, Alexander Zverev, suffered a shocking early exit from Wimbledon 2025 after a hard-fought first-round battle. The German faced France’s Arthur Rinderknech in a match that began on day one, June 30, but was suspended after two sets with the score tied at one set apiece, 6-7(3), 7-6(8).
When play resumed the following day, the No. 3 seed in the men’s singles couldn’t regain control and ultimately fell to the Frenchman in the remaining sets, 3-6, 7-6(5), 4-6.
Last season, the German reached the round of 16 at the tournament but was defeated by Taylor Fritz in five sets. Rinderknech will face Chilean Cristian Garín in the second round.

#2 Coco Gauff
Wimbledon 2025 witnessed yet another major upset as second seed Coco Gauff crashed out of the tournament following a straight-sets defeat to Dayana Yastremska. The American star was outplayed by the Ukrainian, who secured a 7-6(3), 6-1 victory to advance to the next round.
After her triumph at the clay court Slam, this marks Gauff’s biggest setback, as she exits Wimbledon in the opening round. The 21-year-old had made it to the Round of 16 last year, where she fell to Emma Navarro in straight sets. Yastremska, meanwhile, will face Russian Anastasia Zakharova in the second round.
#1 Ugo Humbert
On the men’s side, 18th seed Ugo Humbert also suffered an unexpected exit following his defeat to Gaël Monfils. Although Humbert gained control by winning the second and third sets, it wasn’t enough to seal the win. He eventually bowed out after a five-set battle, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), 5-7, 2-6.
The 27-year-old Frenchman reached the Round of 16 last year, where he faced two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and lost in four sets. Monfils will take on Hungarian Márton Fucsovics in the second round on July 03.
Despite several upsets, many top-seeded players on both the men’s and women’s sides, including Jannik Sinner, Tommy Paul, Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Iga Swiatek, Mirra Andreeva, and Emma Navarro, remain in the tournament and have advanced to the second round.
