NBA insider Jovan Buha recently explored the challenges that could block James from leaving the Lakers, emphasizing the difficulties of matching his salary and finding a trade partner willing to offer significant value in return.
“You’ve got to have the matching salary, and that’s upwards of mid-50s,” Buha explained. “The Lakers aren’t just going to take on a matching salary to make a deal. It has to be good players.”
Salary matching is a well-known hurdle in NBA trades, especially for high-earning superstars like James, and it’s only the first of several complications.
Beyond salary, Buha suggested the Lakers would likely seek a package similar to what the Phoenix Suns received for Kevin Durant – a mix of promising young talent and valuable draft picks.
In his analysis, Buha referenced the 10th overall pick and five second-round picks, though it’s important to note that Durant was traded to the Suns, not the Houston Rockets.
While the exact details may not apply directly to James’s situation, the broader point stands: The Lakers are expected to demand a substantial return if they consider moving their star.
“They’re probably going to want draft capital on top of it, and they are looking at a similar package to what Phoenix got for Kevin Durant and what Houston gave up,” Buha said. “I think those parameters make finding a natural trade partner difficult.”

According to Buha, with the Cavaliers reportedly out of the running, the only remaining teams that could look to trade for James are the Dallas Mavericks or the New York Knicks.
However, even these options come with significant hurdles. The Mavericks would likely need to include multiple players to match James’s salary, and the Knicks would have to part with key contributors like OG Anunoby or Mitchell Robinson, and possibly draft picks, to make a deal work.
“Like, New York’s interesting, I guess, if it’s [OG] Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson or if it’s KAT [Karl-Anthony Towns] straight up, but are they throwing in picks in that?” Buha explained. “And the Dallas trade, you’ve got to take on four guys basically to make the salary work. It’s tough to see a team that makes sense.”
As the number of potential trade destinations for James continues to shrink, the prediction that he will likely finish his career in Los Angeles appears increasingly accurate.
