Tempers flared, and fans erupted on Tuesday (June 17) night as a heated altercation between Marina Mabrey and Caitlin Clark stole the spotlight during the Indiana Fever vs. Connecticut Sun matchup.
What started as a routine play quickly spiraled into chaos when Clark was shoved to the floor, and the reaction was instant. As the referees issued controversial penalties, WNBA fans flooded social media demanding answers.
Fans Think Marina Mabrey’s Punishment for Shoving Caitlin Clark Was Not Enough
The Fever’s Tuesday night matchup against the Sun turned into one of the most controversial games of the WNBA season after a third-quarter scuffle involving WNBA superstar Clark and the Sun’s guard Mabrey triggered a firestorm of reactions, both on the court and online.
The flashpoint came midway through the third quarter at Gainbridge Fieldhouse when Clark appeared visibly frustrated after being poked in the eye by Sun guard Jacy Sheldon. As Sheldon defended her, Clark shoved the guard in the chest. That, however, was only the start.
Seconds later, Mabrey stepped in and forcefully shoved Clark to the hardwood. It was a move that left Fever fans stunned and lit up social media with demands for immediate ejection.
The referees issued technical fouls to both Clark and Mabrey and a flagrant foul to Sheldon. But to many fans, that simply wasn’t enough.
“Marina Mabrey better get ejected. That is a flagrant 2!” one user posted on X, clearly fuming with frustration.

Following the heated exchange, officials assessed technical fouls to Caitlin Clark and Marina Mabrey for their roles in the altercation. Additionally, Sheldon was hit with a flagrant foul for the initial contact that sparked the confrontation.
Referee judgment came under heavy fire as well. “These refs shouldn’t be allowed to work LA Fitness games, let alone WNBA,” posted another frustrated viewer, echoing what many deemed an egregious lack of control from the officiating crew.

While Clark, no stranger to physical play and media attention, got up quickly and stayed in the game, fans were not ready to let the incident slide. One user even posted, “She should be arrested,” referencing Mabrey’s shove with a mix of hyperbole and outrage.

Though tempers cooled and the game resumed, the moment added to a growing list of physical encounters targeting Clark, the former No. 1 overall pick and biggest name to enter the WNBA league in years.
Despite the intense physicality and on-court drama, the Fever dominated the Sun with an 88-71 victory. Clark led the charge, scoring 20 points on the efficient shooting of 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line, proving that while the game got heated, her focus never wavered.
The physical tussles, including the controversial shove by Mabrey, couldn’t slow down the Fever’s momentum as they secured a convincing win amid the escalating tensions.
