As Bryce Underwood Tries to Justify $10M Hype, Analyst Predicts Sherrone Moore’s Quarterback Plan at Michigan

Over ten million dollars. That’s what Michigan paid to flip Bryce Underwood from LSU, and that number follows him everywhere he goes. The freshman quarterback hasn’t thrown a single pass in Ann Arbor yet, but he’s already carrying the weight of a program’s championship hopes and a contract that screams “franchise savior.”

The pressure is real, the expectations are sky-high, and head coach Sherrone Moore knows exactly what he’s dealing with. The question isn’t whether Underwood can play, it’s whether anyone can handle this kind of spotlight as a soon-to-be 18-year-old.

What Makes Bryce Underwood’s High School Numbers So Special?

Underwood’s credentials coming out of Belleville High School were nothing short of elite. A four-year starter with a career record of 50-4, he led the Tigers to two Division I MHSAA State Championships and three consecutive championship appearances.

The numbers tell the story of complete dominance. He compiled nearly 13,000 all-purpose yards and 179 total touchdowns over his high school career, showcasing his dual-threat ability and leadership. His senior season alone featured 2,509 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and a 71.8% completion rate.

Despite those eye-popping stats, analysts at Big Ten Media Days urged caution. In a recent segment, analyst Hailey Sutton noted, “They threw everything at Bryce Underwood to get him to flip from LSU to Michigan. When you’ve got $10 million floating around, there’s going to be a lot of pressure on you as the starter.”

That pressure has led some to question if Underwood may be overhyped or simply facing expectations that are nearly impossible to meet as a true freshman.

Moore is well aware of the situation surrounding his prized recruit. Entering his second season at the helm, Moore is expected to take a measured approach with Underwood, potentially easing him into the starting role. The Wolverines signed veteran quarterback Mikey Keene, a multi-year starter at UCF and Fresno State, giving Michigan a reliable option to split reps early in the season.

How Will Moore Handle the Two-Quarterback Situation?

Analysts predict Moore may implement a dual-quarterback system, much like the one Michigan used during J.J. McCarthy’s early career alongside Cade McNamara.

“Moore is a former offensive lineman. He knows the best way to take pressure off a freshman quarterback is to run the football,” college football analyst Danny Kanell observed. Michigan’s power-run identity could return in full force as the coaching staff works to acclimate Underwood without overwhelming him.

While Underwood’s spring game performance was considered “bumpy,” his athleticism and ability to make plays with his legs remain undeniable. This dual-threat capability gives Moore flexibility in how he deploys his freshman signal-caller.

“The real difference-maker is where you see Bryce Underwood come in as a runner,” Kanell said. “He can really pressure defenses in ways Michigan hasn’t seen in a while.”

As Moore builds on a strong first year that included wins over Alabama and all of Michigan’s rivals, the quarterback situation will remain under intense scrutiny. However, with a veteran fallback option in Keene, a strong run game, and a defense ranked among the nation’s best, Michigan appears well-equipped to handle the Underwood era with patience and precision.
