Aaron Rodgers walked into Pittsburgh with championship expectations and a ticking clock. At 41, the future Hall of Fame quarterback has one final season to chase his second Super Bowl ring, and the Steelers have gone all-in to make it happen. But after trading away George Pickens, there’s still one glaring hole that needs filling.

Why Would Pittsburgh Target Romeo Doubs?
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ offseason moves have been nothing short of aggressive. The franchise made a blockbuster move in signing Rodgers as their new quarterback, bolstered the secondary by bringing in Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey, and traded for DK Metcalf to give Rodgers a top-tier wide receiver to work with.
However, after sending Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, the Steelers’ receiving corps still lacks depth, keeping the door open for another addition before the 2024-25 season begins. One name being speculated is a former teammate of Rodgers.
Rodgers is known for not having had major investments made at wide receiver throughout his career. Though he played alongside stars like Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams, the Green Bay Packers consistently avoided selecting wide receivers in the first round of the draft.
While that approach worked when Rodgers was in his prime, he needs more help at this stage in his career, and the Steelers are well aware of that. They traded for Metcalf, hoping Rodgers would become their starting quarterback, even before he had officially signed with the team.

Brandon Austin listed 10 potential trades that could happen before the season kicks off, and one of them involves the Packers and Steelers reaching a deal to send wide receiver Romeo Doubs to Pittsburgh in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick.
“Doubs’ 600-plus receiving yards in each of the last two seasons outpace current Pittsburgh Steelers No. 2 options like Robert Woods and Calvin Austin III. The Steelers, following the trade of George Pickens, have a glaring need for another wide receiver opposite DK Metcalf,” Austin wrote. What Makes This Deal Work for Green Bay?
For the Packers, the trade makes sense when considering their current wide receiver group and what unfolded last season. Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Christian Watson, and Doubs all split responsibilities but underperformed.
This led Green Bay to finally select a wide receiver in the first round for the first time in 23 years, taking Matthew Golden with the 23rd overall pick. Golden is expected to climb the depth chart and become the team’s WR1, further limiting Doubs’ opportunities in the offense.
“With Doubs’ production, youth, and manageable $3.5 million cap hit, he could be a logical target given Pittsburgh’s $32.2 million in cap space. His familiarity with Aaron Rodgers could provide added chemistry for a revamped offense,” Austin added.

For the Steelers, Doubs would fit perfectly into the role he has played best in his career, serving as the No. 2 receiver behind Metcalf and giving Rodgers a familiar target who can be seamlessly integrated into his system and style.
This is a now-or-never season for Pittsburgh. Rodgers has already announced this will likely be his final year in the NFL, and the team has made significant moves to pursue a seventh Super Bowl title. At this point, no investment is off the table if it brings them closer to that goal.
