Daniil Medvedev secured his place in the Halle Open final after a hard-fought three-set win over Germany’s Alexander Zverev in front of a partisan crowd. The 2021 US Open champion held his nerve through extended baseline rallies and pressure moments, eventually prevailing 6-7(5), 6-3, 7-5 after nearly two and a half hours of compelling grass-court tennis.
The first set went the way of Zverev after a tightly contested tiebreak where his powerful serving and net approaches made the difference. But Medvedev responded with clinical precision in the second, earning an early break and staying rock-solid on serve to even the match.
The final set became a chess match, with both players probing for weaknesses. At 5-5, Medvedev seized a crucial break after a tense deuce game, and calmly served out the match to silence the home crowd and advance to his second Halle final.
Speaking after the match, Medvedev acknowledged the difficulty of playing Zverev on grass: “It’s always tricky facing Sascha, especially here in Germany. He serves well and puts a lot of pressure. I had to stay mentally strong.”
On reaching the final, where he will face Alexander Bublik, Medvedev added with a smile: “I know Bublik has a lot of tricks. I just hope he doesn’t hit three underarm serves in a row again. But I’m ready for the chaos.”
A classic showdown awaits, with Medvedev’s stability and tactical acumen set to be tested by Bublik’s unpredictability. The grass finale in Halle promises to be anything but ordinary.
