Aryna Sabalenka opens up about rebuilding her friendship with Coco Gauff after Roland Garros

Aryna Sabalenka spoke candidly during her Wimbledon 2025 press conference about the emotional fallout following her loss to Coco Gauff in the French Open final and how she worked to repair their relationship. The world No. 1 admitted that her post-match comments, which downplayed Gauff’s performance, were made in the heat of the moment and did not reflect her true feelings.

“It was completely unprofessional of me,” Sabalenka said. “I let my emotions get the better of me. I absolutely regret what I said back then.” She explained that while she initially struggled to reach out, she eventually sent Gauff a message to apologize and clarify her respect for the American’s achievement.

Sabalenka revealed that she wasn’t sure if Gauff would be attending the Berlin tournament, so she opted to send a heartfelt message instead of waiting to apologize in person. “I wanted to make sure she knew she absolutely deserved to win the tournament and that I respect her,” she said.

Gauff, for her part, confirmed that she had accepted the apology and emphasized that she didn’t want to hold a grudge. The two have since practiced together and even shared lighthearted moments on social media, including a TikTok video that showed them dancing and laughing at Wimbledon.

Reflecting on the experience, Sabalenka said it was a learning moment. “I get what I deserve, I believe. It was a tough time for me. The lesson is learned. Definitely not going to happen again,” she added.

Their renewed camaraderie has been welcomed by fans, who were quick to praise both players for their maturity and mutual respect. As Wimbledon unfolds, the possibility of another high-stakes showdown between them adds an extra layer of intrigue to the tournament.
