After a grueling five-set battle against Carlos Alcaraz in the opening round of Wimbledon, Fabio Fognini opened up about the emotions of competing across two generations of tennis. The 38-year-old Italian, who plans to retire at the end of the season, pushed the defending champion to the limit before falling 7–5, 6–7(5), 7–5, 2–6, 6–1 in a match that lasted over four hours.
In his post-match comments, Fognini was asked about his experience playing against both the legendary Big Three—Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic—and the new wave of stars like Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. His response was heartfelt and reflective.
“If I’m going back and I see what I was able to do during my career, I can just say I’m happy,” Fognini said. “I played this game with a lot of passion, as you see, and as everybody knows. I was lucky to play 15 years with the Big Three, Andy, and other great champions. Now I have the chance to play twice with Carlos and once with Jannik.”
He admitted that the moment felt surreal and overwhelming. “As I said before, it’s something strange at the moment. It’s tough for me to say something. A lot of emotion. Images coming in my mind. Probably in the next few days I can say something more.”
Fognini’s career has been defined by flair, unpredictability, and a fierce competitive spirit. From his memorable wins on clay to his fiery exchanges on court, he has always worn his heart on his sleeve. Facing Alcaraz and Sinner in the twilight of his career has added a poetic symmetry to his journey—bridging the era of legends with the rise of new champions.
As he prepares to say goodbye to the sport, Fognini’s words offer a glimpse into the pride and emotion of a player who has seen it all and still finds joy in the fight.
