With a month to go, the hunt for a striker intensifies

By Martin Graham

As the Premier League countdown begins, several clubs are accelerating efforts to secure a top-class forward. While Chelsea have already bolstered their attacking ranks with the arrivals of Liam Delap from Ipswich and Joao Pedro from Brighton, their rivals are still weighing options. Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal are all exploring different avenues, with some clubs targeting the same names.

The competition is fierce, and with numerous clubs circling a handful of targets, clarity is hard to find. Here’s a look at where the striker market currently stands and who could be making moves before the season kicks off.

Close to resolution

Viktor Gyokeres appears to be nearing a switch to Arsenal. The Sweden international, currently at Sporting, has attracted significant attention this summer. The Gunners are expected to finalize a £63.5 million agreement for the 27-year-old, who has scored 97 times in 102 games in Portugal. His arrival would signal an end to Arsenal’s striker search.

Victor Osimhen’s situation is also developing. While the Nigerian forward had been linked to Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea, a return to Galatasaray, where he spent last season on loan, is now in focus. Napoli and the Turkish side are in ongoing talks. Should negotiations collapse, several Premier League teams could reignite their interest.

Targets in demand

Newcastle have no intention of letting Alexander Isak go, but Liverpool remain intrigued. The Sweden striker would command a record-breaking figure of around £130 million, according to sources. Newcastle maintain he is not available, but speculation is likely to persist.

Hugo Ekitike is another name drawing interest. The French forward had his most productive campaign yet with Frankfurt, scoring 15 goals and providing eight assists. Newcastle recently had a £70 million offer turned down, while Liverpool has him on a list of possibilities. Chelsea were previously interested but have likely stepped back following recent signings.

Manchester United have been pursuing Bryan Mbeumo, although talks have quieted. The Brentford attacker is valued at over £60 million. Tottenham are also keeping tabs but have yet to submit an offer. Several European sides are monitoring his situation as well.

Tottenham are also eyeing Yoane Wissa, another Brentford striker. The DR Congo international, who scored 20 goals last season, has attracted interest from Newcastle and Liverpool. Spurs, now managed by his former boss Thomas Frank, are seen as a strong contender.

Options to monitor

Benjamin Sesko remains a possible late-window target. Previously linked with Arsenal, the Leipzig striker could still be on the radar for Manchester United, Liverpool or Chelsea. A move would likely cost around £85 million. United’s interest could hinge on outgoing transfers.

Ollie Watkins continues to generate interest. Arsenal made an attempt to sign the England international in January, but Aston Villa turned down their offer. Liverpool and Manchester United are also admirers, though Villa are reluctant to sell.

Jean-Philippe Mateta is another forward clubs are watching. Crystal Palace are keen to extend the French striker’s contract, which runs until 2027. He scored 17 goals last season and played a crucial role in Palace’s FA Cup success.

Nicolas Jackson faces uncertainty at Chelsea. Despite being their leading striker last season and netting 10 league goals, the additions of Delap and Pedro raise questions about his role. The 24-year-old may attract interest if made available.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is currently without a club after leaving Everton. Both Newcastle and Manchester United are believed to be considering the England striker, who could be a cost-effective option in the market.
