ALFIE MAY STATEMENT:
We are delighted to announce the signing of forward Alfie May on a three-year contract, who joins the Club in a permanent transfer from Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City for an undisclosed fee.
Signing number 10 of the summer for Town, he arrives on the back of playing his part in a record-breaking Sky Bet League One campaign for Birmingham City, scoring 17 goals and assisting nine more across 57 appearances in all competitions as the Blues secured promotion as champions with a highest-ever points total.
On a run of four stand out seasons in Sky Bet League One, his goalscoring record is second-to-none at this level in that time, registering 82 goals and 16 assists from 2021/22 to 2024/25, making 172 appearances in that time for Cheltenham Town, Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City. Taking home the Sky Bet League One Golden Boot at the end of the 2023/24 season, May registered 23 goals that season, making it the second time he had done so in the division.
A record that has been underlined by a deserved run of individual success and accolades, May has been named Sky Bet League One Player of the Month on three occasions (February 2022, March 2023 and October 2023), been named the Sky Bet League One Player of the Year in 2023/24, earned in a place in both the EFL and PFA Team of the Season for 2023/24 whilst also picking up Charlton’s own Player of the Year award for that season.
Born and raised in Kent, he built on a career in non-league football before breaking into the EFL with Doncaster Rovers, never looking back after making his mark in the professional game. In total, May has played 388 times in all competitions, scoring 133 goals and registering 32 assists.
Huddersfield Town Manager Lee Grant commented:
“Alfie is a natural goalscorer with a formidable record in recent years, so we’re really pleased to bring him into the group ahead of the new season kicking off.
“He has a strong mentality, an infectious personality and is full of belief, and those are the hallmarks of all successful strikers. His skillset is different to what we already have in the squad and he compliments the players that he’ll be featuring alongside well, so we look forward to having the opportunity to get straight down to work with him this week.”
“Alfie is another player we’ve introduced to the squad this summer that knows what’s required to be successful at the right end of this division, and that experience will be invaluable across the course of the season.”
Huddersfield Town forward Alfie May added:
“It’s no secret that this is a Club that I’ve come close to joining in the past, and I’m really pleased the opportunity has come again to become a Town player.
“This is a huge Club with massive ambition, and that’s all any player wants to feel a part of. I was in a team last season that felt similarly, so I know what’s possible when a squad clicks with a Manager and there’s a positive feeling across the whole Club, and that’s something I recognise here.
“My job is to work as hard as possible and score goals, and I’ll do everything in my power to repay the faith the Club has shown in me. Lee Grant is an exciting Manager and the way he wants to play and attack feels like the right fit for me, so I can’t wait to get going.”
Welcome to the Club, Alfie!
