Morecambe SUSPENDED from the National League with players told to go home until further notice

Morecambe have been SUSPENDED from the National League with their players told to go home until further notice, as per Pete O’Rourke.

On the 25ht of July, the National League announced they intended to ‘discuss Morecambe sanctions’ as the takeover ownership saga goes on.

The National League raised “serious concerns” about Morecambe’s compliance with its rules, just two weeks before the new campaign begins.

But now the club, who were relegated from League Two last season, facing further turmoil with no completed takeover despite two accepted bids—one from Panjab Warriors, approved by the EFL but stalled, and another from a consortium led by Jonny Cato, whose status remains unclear.

Owner Jason Whittingham, put the club up for sale in September 2022, met with the league to discuss financial obligations for the 2025-26 season, with terms to be met by Monday.

The club’s board resigned after a chaotic summer, including threats of administration and a brief sacking and reinstatement.

A National League compliance meeting has since taken place, with Pete O’Rourke the first to confirm that the Shrimps have “been suspended from the National League until the middle of August as the club’s ownership uncertainty continues. All players been told to go home until further notice.”

If no deal is complete by then, they will be removed from the division. Opening games against Boston, Brackley and Scunthorpe have all been postponed.

Setback in proposed Morecambe court action and player plays in friendly despite agent’s advice

@MorecambeFCFeed: 🚨 Morecambe have been suspended from the National League. We believe this means the Shrimps’ first three fixtures – against Boston, Brackley and Scunthorpe – are suspended, and then the National League would revisit the issue in case a miraculous takeover did occur. In 2019, the EFL suspended each of Bury’s first six fixtures, requesting evidence that they could pay off creditors and could make it through the campaign, but a takeover fell through.

@Jakey_Boyz: Heartbreaking. Had so many good trips to Morecambe over the years and one of the first away trips we look for on the calendar. Hope that c*nt swallows his pride and bails you out somehow. Absolute shame

@joephelan44: If any staff need any help with anything at all please reach out the people of Morecambe and football are here to help

@smit112: Whilst football clubs are chucking around 100s of millions. This is where the pyramid is completely wrong.

@dan_batemannn: This is really sad to see. I really hope a solution can be found but it’s looking less and less likely. Really feel for Morecambe and every single supporter right now.

@TheMemphisEra: Get them sold immediately, such an awful sight to see

@alewis36: Scandalous more unfit owners

@Moonraker_Mart: This is bloody awful news.

@stfcjosh: So sad to see, really hope it somehow ends positively for them 😢

@parkinsonross: Sad this. Amazing how one man can just kill a club seemingly with minimal personal consequences.

@SpireiteAlex: How has this been allowed to happen?? It’s been a very public shambles for months, how has no one stepped in, either footballing or national governance, and sorted this mess out. Shambolic.

@RuytonShrew: Horrific. Jason Whittingham is surely the worst man in football? He deserves all the anger and animosity being directed in his direction – he’s killing a historic football club for no clear reason.

@heyit5sam: A quick reminder that all this can be over today. All Whittingham has to do is sign the papers Panjab have already signed

@Heedonistic_: Unbelievable. Disgraceful.

@andrew_youngers: Awful news

@ThePoolsPod: Awful, awful situation at Morecambe. Great club – I’ve been multiple times and the fans and staff have always been very welcoming. Hopefully Jason Whittingham – the man at the centre of this – sees sense ASAP, before another club ceases to exist.

@skythelimit1970: Can’t believe it’s come to this, my heart goes out to the fans, community and everyone at the club, don’t forget this could happen to any club at any level #cufc

@TeeGee60518810: What a joke, Worthington better watch his head after this shitshow, he needs a right bollocking the sad little prick. This can’t be how Morecambe’s last days as a football club end

@Laticsbiffo: That’s awful news! Blood on your hands Jason.

@elliott_h99: Desperately sad to see. Another club and the heart of a community seemingly run into the ground by dreadful ownership. Could’ve been us so easily if not for the tireless work that went on. My heart goes out to you Morecambe fans!

@TylerBirtles: Heartbreaking. The fans, the volunteers, the staff, the players – all those associated with the club that live and breathe Morecambe FC don’t deserve any of this. Jason Whittingham, you are one heartless individual with a lot to answer for. You’re a disgrace. Shameful. #UTS 🦐

@OffTheLineBlog: Such a crying shame. A proud football club being dragged through the mud. My thoughts go out to all #MorecamebFC fans at this moment – stay strong 💔 Hopefully, the stance from the National League forces a deal through for a sale of the club. Fingers crossed for good news.
