Why Everton signed Aznou and Bayern’s plan ‘didn’t work out’

Former Barcelona academy player Adam Aznou has joined Everton at the Premier League Summer Series in the US after joining the Toffees from Bayern Munich on a four-year deal for a reported fee of around £7.8 million

The 19-year-old has spoken about what he hopes to bring to David Moyes’s squad, while Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen has discussed why the German giants’ plans for the prospect “didn’t work out”.

Aznou made three brief appearances for Bayern in 2024/25, playing twice in the Bundesliga and once in the Champions League.

Why have Everton signed Adam Aznou?

Aznou is likely to predominantly provide competition for Ukraine left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko, who was almost ever-present last season.

“He’s a young talented player with a lot of potential,” Moyes told Everton’s website. “Left-backs are not easy to get and we’ve brought in a young player who we hope will grow.”

The product of Barca’s famed La Masia facility arrives for a modest fee and has been described by Bayern sporting director Max Eberl as “extremely talented”.

“Adam is a creative winger with a lot of attacking drive,” Bayern academy sporting director Holger Seitz said, via Bundesliga.com. “He is quick, technically adept, strong and provides good crosses.”

Aznou thanked Bayern manager Vincent Kompany for taking him to the Club World Cup. “It was my first big experience like this,” he told Everton.

“In one-against-one and dribbling, I really like to take the ball. I have to improve small things, but that’s me. I’m more attacking, but also defending. If we defend well, we can attack.”

Those adventurous qualities will also appeal to Moyes, whose team scored two fewer goals than any other side outside of the relegation zone last season.

Winger Iliman Ndiaye top-scored with nine league goals and Dwight McNeil led the way for assists, with six.

After failing to agree new terms with Barca, Aznou joined Bayern in June 2022 and impressed among their youth teams, including a run of three assists in seven Uefa Youth League games.

Current England manager Thomas Tuchel named Aznou in a first-team squad for the first time in January 2024 and he made his debut as an 18-year-old substitute in November, replacing Alphonso Davies in a 3-0 Bundesliga win over Union Berlin.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Real Valladolid, who finished bottom of LaLiga.

“We don’t only want to develop young players and sell them,” Dreesen said after Aznou’s departure, via Bayern & Germany. “We also want to integrate our academy players into the first team.

“Unfortunately, that did not work out as often as we had hoped. We managed to integrate [Aleksandar] Pavlovic, [Josip] Stanicic and [Jamal] Musiala.

“In the case of Aznou, that didn’t work out – the sporting management and the coach decided to give him the opportunity to develop elsewhere because that wasn’t possible with us. I think it was the right decision.”

After a run of two goals and two assists in five Uefa Youth League matches as Bayern captain, his 13 games for Valladolid included 10 as a starter.

Morocco handed Aznou his first three caps during Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in 2024, starting twice and providing an assist during a three-minute substitute appearance away to Gabon.

Aznou told Everton in his first interview that one of his targets is to go to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December, with a potential 2026 Fifa World Cup campaign in June.

Aznou is Everton’s first defensive recruit ahead of Moyes’s first full season in his second spell at the club and their first campaign at their Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Attacking midfielder Carlos Alcaraz has made his loan move from Flamengo permanent for around £13m and France Under-21 forward Thierno Barry cost £27m from Villarreal.

Mark Travers is expected to provide back-up to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after signing from Bournemouth for £4m.

When does Everton’s 2025/26 Premier League season start?
