Marcus Rashford ‘incredibly powerful’ at Barcelona – Torres

Ferran Torres has praised Marcus Rashford after the on-loan Manchester United forward’s first direct goal involvement at Barcelona provided the prolific winger with his second goal against FC Seoul on Thursday.

England striker Rashford came on as a substitute for a second successive friendly, threading a pass from the left to Ferran Torres for the Spain international’s second strike and Barca’s final goal in the visitors’ 7-3 win at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.

“The team is better than last season,” said Ferran Torres, via Gerard Romero. “Rashford is incredibly powerful. Joan [Garcia] is a great goalkeeper. He’ll give us confidence.”

Barcelona vs FC Seoul: Flick praises Gavi

Manager Hansi Flick voiced concerns over Seoul recovering from 2-0 behind to draw level shortly before half-time.

“We committed some errors and they are things we have to fix,” said Flick, adding that he “saw what I want to see” from midfielder Gavi, who scored with a superb spin and strike.

“It’s great news that he is at this level. We saw a great Gavi at the end of last season.”

Ahead of his second season in charge, Flick is also likely to be pleased by midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s post-match remarks about extending his deal beyond 2026.

“I am very happy here at Barca, both at the club and in the city,” said De Jong. “I think the club is happy with me, so I guess that will lead to a contract extension.”

Marcus Rashford stats

Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-loan, reportedly taking a 25% pay cut as part of a deal offering his loan club a £30.3 million buying option for the 27-year-old.

The former United top scorer produced four goals and six assists in 17 appearances on loan at Aston Villa during the second half of last season, having become a peripheral figure at United since Ruben Amorim’s appointment as manager in November.

Villa manager Unai Emery started Rashford in all four of their Champions League knockout stage matches in 2023/24 and saw him score twice in his final four league starts.

Rashford’s season ended with a hamstring injury that initially kept him out of Aston Villa’s FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace on April 26.

He made his non-competitive Barca debut off the bench in a 3-1 win at Japanese side Vissel Kobe on Sunday and is poised to become the first male English player in a Barcelona line-up since Gary Lineker against Real Zaragoza on June 20, 1987.

Barcelona lineup vs FC Seoul

Lamine Yamal scored twice before the break and Robert Lewandowski opened his pre-season account as Barcelona withstood Seoul’s first-half comeback to win in style.

Andreas Christensen also scored from distance to ensure a procession for Flick’s side, with Cho Young-Wook, Yazan Al-Arab and Jung Han-Min replying for the K League 1 club.

Barcelona starting XI: Joan Garcia; Kounde, Araujo, Cubarsi, Balde; Pedri, De Jong, Olmo, Lamine Yamal, Lewandowski, Raphinha.

Barcelona substitutes: Pena, Szczesny, Kochen, Inigo Martinez, Gavi, Ferran, Rashford, Christensen, Fermon, Casado, Bardghji, Eric Garcia, Jofre, Dro, Fernandez, Guille Fernandez, Fort, Gerard Martin
