The EFL issues a statement on situation at Sheffield Wednesday, calling on Dejphon Chansiri to end “current uncertainty and impasse”.
Sheffield Wednesday faces significant challenges have been cleared by the league to start the Championship season on Sunday against Leicester City.
The club, owned by Dejphon Chansiri, is under financial strain with £178m in losses since 2015, delayed wage payments, and a transfer embargo extended until January 2027 due to over 30 days of late payments in 2025.
The league have said that they are in advanced talks with Chansiri’s advisors to facilitate the club’s sale to resolve ongoing uncertainties.
Issues include a registration embargo, the closure of the North Stand at Hillsborough due to structural concerns, and a depleted squad of 15 players after manager Danny Rohl’s departure.
The EFL say they’re providing financial support through basic award and Premier League solidarity payments, while urging Chansiri to either fund the club or sell it.
They also advise fans against disruptive protests to avoid further sanctions that could impact a potential sale.

EFL STATEMENT:
Upset Sheffield Wednesday fans speak of emotional impact club crisis is having on them
Fans gave their reaction after the EFL issues statement on the current situation at Sheffield Wednesday, calling on Chansiri to end “uncertainty”…
@AEFootball92: ‘EFL Stands alongside Sheffield Wednesday’ is a bit rich at this point don’t you think…
@wigan276: As a Wigan fan this is all too familiar. I hope Wednesday come out the other side but where are the points deductions? You absolutely hammered us. Where is the consistency.
@chris_t_park: So much help for Sheffield Wednesday… pity you couldn’t (or wouldn’t??????) help us at Morecambe
@burtbox: This is a load of PR waffle. Your actions imposing new sanctions through to the year 2027 say the opposite is true and that you are complicit in seeking to destroy the club. The EFL punishes fans/local communities and not bad owners #swfc
@Ram1884_: Are Sheffield Wednesday getting preferential treatment because their owner is foreign? Couldn’t wait to throw point deductions and other sanctions at Derby because of Mel Morris. #dcfc
@SteveinSheff: @EFL extending the transfer embargo on SWFC at a time when the club is in deep financial trouble and actively trying to sell is not just tone-deaf — it’s destructive. Punishing clubs while they’re down doesn’t protect the game. It suffocates it. Shameful. #EFL #SWFC
@riggokyle546: Right ok let’s get this straight. Derby miss 1 months payment points deduction? Wednesday miss 3 no points deduction? If you’re gonna punish clubs at least make it fair with other clubs. Yourselfs are showing you had a it out for Mel but punished the club instead 🤦🏼♂️
@MattOwl29: So what we’re going to try and do is make Chansiri sell up for a fair market value but you can’t sign anybody for 3 years and you’ll be buying and owning with both arms behind your back to make it’s ultra difficult. Honestly you lot are fucking unbelievable!!
@shinfield_royal: EFL = not fit for purpose
@heyit5sam: EFL stands with nobody. If they did, clubs like Bury, Macclesfield and Morecambe would still be in the EFL
@michaelgranty: You haven’t changed/ learned anything from what Reading had to go through all u do is punish the fans staff and players this has no effect on the owner he sells and walks into the distance while fans see there club hand cuffed by restrictions from previous owners mis management
@The_Real_Matt_C: Why is Sheffield Wednesday getting preferential treatment. Compared to that what Morecambe and bury received? The bias is obvious.
@SteT238: I don’t see any points deductions like you did for #wafc after 4 late payments. No demand for 125% of wages in an account or pts off either. Also, didn’t you stop #bwfc and #buryfc from starting the season when funding for the whole campaign was in doubt? What’s different here?
@WWoodbine74: Quite hilarious when you consider how the EFL did everything it could to kill DCFC.
@mrpaulhank: Vicious circle of incompetence..impose more penalties on club (not owner) makes us less attractive ➡️ Chancer can’t sell ➡️ impose more penalties ➡️ make us less saleable ➡️ Chancer can’t sell… absolutely not fit for purpose @EFL
