Preston’s Paul Heckingbottom criticises personal trainer for injury sustained by Daniel Jebbison

Preston’s Paul Heckingbottom publicly criticises a personal trainer for an injury sustained by Daniel Jebbison.

The manager expressed anger over an ankle injury to the loanee during a private fitness session with a personal trainer.

The 21-year-old, on loan from Bournemouth, is expected to be out for around a month. An in an interview with BBC Radio Lancashire, Heckingbottom took issue with the lack of accountability from external trainers, who promote their work but face no consequences for injuries.

He cited a similar case with goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and also banned Preston players from such sessions, stressing that the club bears the cost of injuries while trainers profit without responsibility.

Bromley manager Andy Woodman, Freddie’s Dad, tweeted having watched the video, saying: “Maybe get professional s&c guys that do things properly rather than amateurs!”

Heckingbottom said, as can be heard in the video above: “I’m really angry about that. There’s a growing trend of footballers to work with people from outside.

“It’s an accident, I get it, but it’s not happening any more with any Preston players.

“These guys work with these players and they post their work all over social media and they want to promote their business.

“They’re happy to take the money, but they don’t give us any money back when they injure the players in their sessions.

“They’ll not be posting on social media that Jebbo’s out for a month, so I’ll tell everyone that when they work with players they can put them out as well.

“If we injure players or they get injured in a game or in training or in our gym, then it’s on us but it’s us that suffer.

“Other people are happy to post all the positives and take the players’ money, but they don’t get any of the negatives out of it.

“So they’re not punishing Preston any more, it’s not happening.”

Twitter users gave their reaction as Preston’s Paul Heckingbottom criticises a personal trainer for an injury sustained by Daniel Jebbison…

@qprjohn11: Naming the trainer is a proper dickhead move, he knows what he’s doing. Blokes always been an unlikeable prick

@GAnscomb: Great news for Preston fans this 🙌🏻😂 Jebbo out for a month

@jh_blade: Miss hearing him speak on our behalf, proper manager.

@cjslat3r: A doctor who was head of Liverpool strength and conditioning is not going to unnecessarily injure players. Very bold from hecky.. who inured the rest?

@itwasjustbanter: Don’t know the specifics of this case but he’s spot on re this trend. Find it bizarre that clubs have such detailed programs for players but then allow them to work with chancers selling magic beans who are primarily preoccupied with getting content for their insta reels.

@TBBodell: I’ve got no personal beef with Daniel Jebbison. But this is so Daniel Jebbison.

@androofrench: The new book, ‘101 ways to screw up a loan move’ by Daniel Jebbison, available soon via all good retailers . . . #watfordfc

@sionmgjones: Hecky had problems with players being injured at Sheffield United too. Rhys Norrington Davies being a prime example of that

@djm_eightyone: Fair play from Heckingbottom. He’ll be the one sacked if things don’t go well, not the players and certainly not the PTs!

@JHewitt_17: Tbh don’t see the reason they need personal trainers

@FlyingKiwisFC: Not just been injured in that one session but the affect on loading/workload which is planned and monitored but the club, often individualised. Not sure how many players use them in regularly in season though.

@FPL_Chambo: Frustration is understandable, voicing it in this manner is unwise. The only thing he’ll achieve here is to piss off his own players and to deter others from joining his club.

@Siobhaneeee: 👏 good to see some grit from hecky. Let’s hope he holds himself as accountable but I like it. Jebbison should have been starting that game

@Craigos0: Still Surprised there are no rules in place to stop players using PT’s. Too much football being played already let alone players pushing their bodies even further

@TWFootball1867:
1) does the club offer the service
2) are the club providers any good?
3) would it have happened anyway (the injury).
I work with and have worked with pros and it is often because they don’t get it from the club.

@Keelan_Egan: Spot on from Hecky this.

@Mr_JLV_LTFC: Good for him. So many “coaches” doing 121’s at all levels with the sole goal of making money and no real duty of care. As for all these “academies” 🤦🏻‍♂️

@ewins_gary: Can understand his frustration…demands on players are more but the rate of muscle/hamstring injuries are ridiculously high now…footballers bodies are more like athletes

@Sustain_Fitness: The way he names the PT as well 😂 Injures can happen at any point, I wonder if players have always got on well with his methods 👀

@BillyJ_W: Having worked with PT companies before, not a huge fan of these comments. Players need to stay fit over the off szn, if they come back unfit, they’ll be heavily scrutinised. PT’s have every right to show off their brand over social media. Injuries just happen…

@PainterMags: Will be interesting if the injury is not the fault of the PT and he loses business being named!!

@patrick_8989_: Poor naming and shaming that it’s obvious the PT isn’t trying to hurt anyone. Kent Move that

@kaigoughy2: Prick move name dropping

@JordanWiemer: There’s risk in every activity these players take part in. On the one hand I do get the frustration. But you’ve got a young lad trying to improve himself. He’s injured himself training, not riding around on a jet ski. I went and looked at the trainers profile, looks like a good coach. The small glimpse of what he’s working on with Jebbison is solid/standard. At Preston’s level I can almost guarantee you aren’t allocating the resources to have guys that can give this sort of singular focus to your playing staff. To name the guy is just an additional level of petty. Hope it works the other way and boosts his business.

@MattLargeDesign: Ironic that Heckingbottom wants to accuse someone else of ruining Jebbo’s progression when he ended the same players breakthrough season by ruining a productive loan spell and leaving him to rot in the reserves #bafc
