Match preview for Paris Saint-Germain v Tottenham
The European season opens in Udine as Paris Saint-Germain meet Tottenham in the Super Cup on Wednesday.
Both clubs arrive having overcome major hurdles last term – PSG as Champions League winners and Spurs as Europa League victors – and both now have the chance to add another trophy before domestic campaigns kick off.
PSG enjoyed a historic 2024-25, completing an unprecedented quadruple as they swept domestic competitions and finally landed the Champions League, the pinnacle coming with a 5-0 victory over Inter in the final.
Their route to that success was incredible, but a recent Club World Cup final defeat by Chelsea means they return to action off the back of little friendly preparation.
Their Ligue 1 season starts at the weekend against Nantes.
Tottenham have had a much fuller pre-season under new boss Thomas Frank, playing six friendlies and remaining unbeaten until a heavy 4-0 defeat by Bayern Munich last week.
Despite ending a long trophy drought with Europa League success, Spurs made a managerial change over the summer and arrive in Italy still finding their feet ahead of a Premier League opener against Burnley.
Neither club has previously won the Super Cup – it is Spurs’ first appearance in the competition.
Team news for Paris Saint-Germain v Tottenham
PSG’s squad is largely intact following their trophy-laden campaign. The main uncertainty involves the goalkeeper spot – Gianluigi Donnarumma looks set to move on and Lucas Chevalier has been brought in as a likely option between the posts.
Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez return from suspension, but Joao Neves is suspended for two matches after his red card in the Club World Cup final.
Tottenham will be without James Maddison for most of the season after an ACL injury suffered in a pre-season friendly.
Dejan Kulusevski and Radu Dragusin remain sidelined, Dominic Solanke has missed much of pre-season and is unlikely to be risked here, and left-back Destiny Udogie is questionable for both this match and the Burnley opener.
