Tottenham condemn ‘cowards’ for racially abusing Mathys Tel after PSG win the Super Cup

Tottenham condemn ‘cowards’ for racially abusing Mathys Tel after PSG win the Super Cup on penalties following a late comeback draw.

Tel was abused on social media after missing a penalty in their 4-3 Super Cup loss to Paris St-Germain on Wednesday night.

The club hit out at those hiding behind anonymous profiles and vowed to work with authorities to take action.

@SpursOfficial wrote: “We are disgusted at the racial abuse that Mathys Tel has received on social media following last night’s UEFA Super Cup defeat.

“Mathys showed bravery and courage to step forward and take a penalty, yet those who abuse him are nothing but cowards – hiding behind anonymous usernames and profiles to spout their abhorrent views.

“We will work with the authorities and social media platforms to take the strongest possible action against any individual we are able to identify.

“We stand with you, Mathys.”

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, speaking to TNT Sports after the game: “I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at this moment in time. We had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal, then of course the momentum shifted a little bit.

“The team, the players, the club, the fans, there is a lot to be happy with. It is a flip of the coin when you go to a penalty shootout.

“We showed that we can be adaptable and pragmatic, and we needed to be against a team like PSG. The way we wanted to defend, high pressure and low defending, was top, almost perfect, and also the set pieces were very good and dangerous.”

On set- pieces: “It is key. For any team it should be a weapon in my opinion. We will definitely be focusing on it because I think it is a key area. At times I think we showed that we can play up against any team in the world. That is a positive I will take away from this.”

On further transfer business: “We’d like to strengthen the squad. No doubt about that. We do work very hard to see if we can do that. In general I am very happy with the squad but in any transfer window we try to see if we can make the squad stronger before the window closes.”

On facing Burnley in the Premier League opener on Saturday: “It is a short turnaround, there will be disappointment in the next 24 hours and when I wake up tomorrow, but tomorrow afternoon we will be ready, and Friday we will be more ready. And we will make sure we come flying out on Saturday.”

He added: “Very, very proud of the players, the team, the club, the fans.”“I think the players gave everything. Playing against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best at the moment. I think 75, 80 minutes it was perfect, almost giving nothing away against the four players with unbelievable individual quality on the pitch.

“So very, very proud of them.

“I think if you play 2-2 against PSG you take that. I think that single result is good. Then you have a penalty shootout that we lost – maybe we need to work on penalties. Maybe that’s the thing to win a final.

“I think if everyone said this would be a draw and we’d do some penalties, everyone would think ‘Oh, that’s quite impressive’. Then if you look into the performance we actually put in and the shift we put in – wow, what a mentality throughout the game. A lot of things to be happy with.”

Frank on his formation change: “Probably decided that on the day after the Bayern game.

“Already I knew that we had to do something a little bit different against PSG. So it was a special operation. It was in medical terms operation succeeded but the patient died. So not that good in the end.

“We worked on a gameplan that was a little bit different and very, very close to succeeding.”

PSG’s Luis Enrique said: “For 80 minutes, we didn’t deserve that. I think Tottenham deserved winning the match because we can feel they were in form and can feel they have been training for six weeks.

“They played a great match and we have only been training for six days. Sometimes football is unfair and I have to say we were very lucky in the last 10 minutes to score two goals.

“I have to say my players had faith until the last minute like our supporters but football is unpredictable and in that sense I have to say we were very lucky.’

On whether a lack of preseason training affected their performance in the Super Cup: “Absolutely, from the first minute when the players touched the ball, when the players played without having the time to think about where to pass.

“Yes – a lot of unprecise passes and it’s difficult to play the way you want to play if you don’t train. I have to say it was like a miracle (to win).

“(Spurs_ more than held their own, they were the better team by far. I think Luis Enrique actually sort of apologised in a way when he went up to Thomas Frank at the end there.

“For me, when they analyse the performance, that will give them so much belief going into the Champions League. Playing against this great side that have won the Champions League, “we went toe-to-toe and more, and over 90 minutes we were the better team”.

“The substitutions made the difference but at the end of the day they have got a Champions League to play and I think that’s a template.

“The way they played there, don’t be surprised if they play Liverpool, if they play Manchester City, if they play Arsenal – that’s a template to play in the Champions League and maybe away from home.

“That is something they will really grasp. They will look at that and analyse and say “we were the better team”.

“So that’s a template now to go on the front foot and go toe-to-toe with these teams. That is a massive performance from Tottenham tonight from a manager’s point-of-view.

“Yes it’s emotional and disappointing because you are 2-0 up with 10 minutes to go and you’ve lost the trophy, but at the end of the day I think it’s a real positive night for Tottenham.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Tottenham condemn ‘cowards’ for racially abusing Mathys Tel after PSG win the Super Cup…

@HLTCO: Fries my head that people are so mind-numbingly thick and insular. These muppets walk amongst us, grabbing their phones to abuse a lad for having the balls to take a penalty in a final; it’s a shambles in every sense.

@llewi01: It absolutely should not be tolerated. Find them and remove them from all parts of our club. Mathys showed courage and a willingness to step up for the club last night to take a pen when many wouldn’t it. He deserves so much more than this from our fan base.

@Sophie_England_: Well said. The real Spurs fans are all with you Mathys 🤍

@HollieAgombar: These are some well chosen words from the club. Keep your head up

@Ben_White86: Good statement from the club. Anybody abusing a 20 year old over a game of football should be ashamed of themselves. Yet more evidence that there should be stricter ID requirements to start accounts – would provide far more accountability for these cowards. Pathetic behaviour.

@SamieJxx: This is pathetic btw, if the first thing you do is come on social media, search the players name and racially abuse him then you need to seek help.

@thfcrt: Absolutely disgusting. Any “fan” doing this is a moron. He’s a young player who seems to love the club, has bags of potential and will come good no doubt.

@AndrewGreaves84: What the f*ck possesses people to do this? The lad missed a penalty in a glorified pre-season friendly, it’s hardly the end of the bloody world. There’s absolutely no room for racism in society!

@samgoldman91: Honestly what morons racially abuse someone. He didn’t play well. He missed a penalty. Say he was shit, that’s fine. But racism? Seriously? Fucking hell

@nickty61: What the hell is wrong with people? I grew up on the legend of 1984. WHL singing ‘One Danny Thomas’ having just missed our 5th penalty to win the UEFA Cup. You can hear it in the footage as Parks saves again.

@VectisSpursIOW: 100%. Social media accounts should need ID verification, might stop these keyboard warriors from abusing people. Disgusting from these ‘fans’.
