How long is Liverpool star out for?

Jeremie Frimpong’s first season in the Premier League has been curtailed by an issue the Netherlands international suffered in Liverpool’s opening match at home to Bournemouth.

Right-back Frimpong was surprisingly replaced by midfielder Wataru Endo after 60 minutes – and manager Arne Slot has now explained what happened to the 24-year-old and when he is next expected to be in action.

Slot also provided an update on Conor Bradley, who is competing with Frimpong in the position but has been out with a hamstring injury.

Jeremie Frimpong injury

Frimpong, who scored his first Liverpool goal in their Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace on August 10, has also suffered a hamstring issue.

“The medical team were completely right about Jeremie to tell me I had to take him off, because he’s out until the international break,” said Slot.

“I think I was criticised a bit for taking him off. It had nothing to do with how he played but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring.

“It was a good call to take him off because otherwise he might have been out for longer.”

Slot added that 22-year-old Bradley had returned to training for the first time “for a few minutes” on August 21, four days before Liverpool’s top-flight trip to Newcastle.

When will Frimpong be back from injury?

Slot predicts Frimpong will be available again for Liverpool’s trip to Burnley on September 14 (14:00 BST / 09:00 ET / 06:00 PT).

That means Frimpong could experience his first Merseyside derby when Liverpool host Everton six days later (12:30 BST / 07:30 ET / 04:30 PT).

The Reds’ remaining fixture in September is a trip to Palace on September 27 (15:00 BST / 10:00 ET / 07:00 PT).

Which games will Frimpong miss?

Frimpong is out of the trip to St James’ Park on August 25 (20:00 BST / 15:00 ET / 12:00 PT) and the home game against Arsenal on August 31 (16:30 BST / 11:30 ET / 08:30 PT).

The Gunners finished second to Liverpool by 10 points in Slot’s first season in charge in 2024/25.

The Netherlands are likely to miss Frimpong for their World Cup qualifiers at home to Poland on September 4 (19:45 BST / 14:45 ET / 11:45 PT) and away to Lithuania on September 7 (17:00 BST / 12:00 ET / 07:00 PT).

Frimpong injury history

Frimpong’s last injury involved an absence of almost two months for Leverkusen because of an ankle problem during the 2021/22 season.

“Jeremie has a very positive injury record,” Slot said when he was asked whether he was concerned about his options, with defender Joe Gomez also struggling for fitness.

“Conor was out once or twice last season. We only have two injuries and unfortunately they’re in the same position.

“The good thing is that Wataru played in that position and Dominik Szoboszlai has played there.”

Jeremie Frimpong stats

After 10 years in Manchester City’s youth ranks, Frimpong left in 2019 for Celtic, with whom he won a Scottish treble and the club’s young player of the season award in 2019/20.

Leverkusen signed Frimpong as a 20-year-old in 2021, paying a reported fee of up to £11.5m for a player who helped them win the Bundesliga and reach the Europa League final in 2023/24.

Frimpong was named in the Bundesliga team of the season for each of his two final campaigns at the club and made the first of his 13 senior Oranje appearances in 2023, winning a place in their Euro 2024 squad.

Conor Bradley stats

Bradley first played for Liverpool against Norwich City in September 2021, becoming the first Northern Irishman to feature for them in a competitive game since Sammy Smyth in 1954.

He finished the 2021/22 season on five appearances and won Bolton’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards while spending the subsequent campaign on loan with Wanderers, as well as winning the EFL Trophy.

After returning to his parent club, Bradley made 23 appearances in all competitions in 2023/24, scoring his first Liverpool goal in a 4-1 home win over Chelsea in January 2024 and winning the EFL Cup the following month.

He made 29 Liverpool appearances last season, with five of his seven starts coming after Alexander-Arnold said he would be leaving.
