Leicester City part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy and ramp up search for his replacement

Leicester City part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy and ramp up their search for his replacement according to reports on Friday.

The 48 year old has parted ways with Leicester by mutual consent after failing to prevent their relegation from the Premier League.

Ruud, who managed only six league wins in 27 matches, faced challenges with an unbalanced squad and limited January transfers, securing just one signing.

Despite introducing academy talents like Jeremy Monga, poor results and a record nine consecutive home league games without scoring led to his exit after 210 days.

Leicester’s board faces scrutiny for appointing Van Nistelrooy, whose experience was questioned, and for poor communication, leaving him without clarity for weeks.

The club now faces an uncertain Championship season with potential points deductions and financial issues.

Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Röhl is a possible target, while Sean Dyche has been ruled out.

CLUB STATEMENT:

Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud’s contract with the Club as First Team Manager will terminate with immediate effect.

Men’s First Team Manager Ruud van Nistelrooy and Club mutually agree to terminate contract

The Dutchman joined Leicester City in November 2024

Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the Club. From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the Club’s Academy into our First Team environment.

Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the Football Club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future.

Ruud commented as follows: “I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the Club and to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the Club well for the future.”

Preparation for the EFL Championship season will continue with the planned start of pre-season on Monday 30 June.

First Team coaching staff will oversee the delivery of those plans until a new manager is appointed.

There will be no further comment until this process has been completed.

Here’s how fans reacted as Leicester City part ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy and ramp up the search for his replacement…

@ragsyrai: Absolutely pathetic that it’s taken this long

@CBailey31: 4 managers on the bounce lied to about transfers from our well run club. Surely this is going to put so many future managers off coming here. Free beer though yeah #lcfc

@AndyBisnosLCFC:
Thank God!! See ya later Ruud… a reminder:
Points per game in Premier League relegation seasons:
1994/95 – 0.69
2001/02 – 0.74
2003/04 – 0.87
2022/23 – 0.89
2024/25 – 0.66 (RvN 0.60)
WORST… SEASON… EVER 💩
#LCFC

@benadams79: No doubt Van Nistelrooy was a complete disaster but he’s just a small piece I don’t think any manager succeeds here until there is radical change at the top Percy indicating that RvN was promised funds for January that never materialised. 4 managers on the bounce lied to #lcfc

@gerardcassidy: What took @LCFC so long to do what the World and the crows knew that they were going to do anyway? I feel sorry for Ruud van Nistelrooy, a man who has behaved with great integrity.

@CBailey31: So we were lead to believe they were waiting till 1st July to sack RVN as the money will come out of next seasons finances. If you were going to do it before 1st July why on earth would you wait till the 27th June to do it and not after the last game. Twats #lcfc

@Forest_Review: The season finished nearly 5 weeks ago by the way, and the new season starts in 5 weeks. They are so far behind the other clubs who are already back in pre-season. What a mess.

@camplus1: I truly felt sorry for Ruud – no real backing from the club. I thought he always spoke so well in interviews but the results just weren’t there. I thought he’d be a good DoF in another timeline but obviously not to be. Hope he does well in the future! #LCFC

@CoopsLCFC: Well, what a disaster that was. In a bizarre way though I feel for him a bit. Got a shit hand, zero support and the way he has been treated the last couple of months is appalling. Still, the right decision and should have happened months ago

@Jakebroadwell2: Right decision.. But haven’t got a replacement lined up with only 2 weeks to go before our first pre season plans! Only a Leicester thing 🦊 On a serious note.. All the best Ruud! #LCFC

@Chris1014Lee: What an absolute car crash of a club. Contracted until June 2027 so another manager walking away with a multi million pound settlement for being a failure. Best job in the world. Absolutely zero incentive to do well.

@ChrisSansomee: Embarrassing that it took this long. Get the board gone next. Hope Ruud’s got a good payout… he needed to go but he’s been treated terribly by Top and co.
