Everton call out ITV pundit Lee Dixon for comment about Jordan Pickford during England match

Everton call out ITV pundit Lee Dixon for a comment made about Jordan Pickford during the Latvia v England match on Tuesday night.

Lee Dixon questioned why goalkeeper Jordan Pickford remains at Everton despite his national team success, suggesting he move to a “bigger club.”

This caught the attention of many, including Everton, who took to their Twitter account, highlighting the club’s achievements.

The official club account shared a post on X which read: “9 top-flight titles, 5 FA Cups, 1 European title, one of football’s most passionate fanbases, a world-class new stadium.

“Everton FC – a big club: past, present & future, @LeeDixon2.”

The England No.1 said ahead of preparing to commit himself to a new four-year deal at the club: “Obviously everyone knows how happy I am at Everton but I’m not going to go too much into it. I’ve got my England head on for the next two days. I just want to get the qualification, get the win tomorrow and hopefully get another cap and hit number 80. That’s my sole focus at the minute.”

On remaining so consistent for England: “I put it down to the way I train. I feel like I train really well. I train to improve. When the session is put on, I give 100 percent. I think I tick every box Monday to Friday to be at the best I can be on a match day.

“And I’ll never change that method. I think it does work. Some I did as a young kid, it got put into us as a young kid because when you’re at youth team and you’re not training well or you’re trying to have a down day, you probably wouldn’t get picked to play on a Saturday.

“I’ve never changed that attitude. I’ve always had that mentality. I train as the way I play. I know it’s an easy saying but it’s something that I feel has worked … because I’ve ticked every box.

“I’m fully prepared for what is going to come on match-day, that’s where I step up that’s the arena where I go and enjoy myself and put on a display.”

Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel spoke on Pickford after the win against Wales: “It’s not easy to stay focused in a dominant first half like that. Have basically nothing to do.

“And then suddenly, I think in the 42nd minute, there’s situation where it always can be dangerous. And second half, he had a very difficult save to close his legs very fast.

“He’s a fantastic shot stopper. There is no doubt about it.

“Today there was a challenge for him because they pressed us high. And we want to escape the pressing.

“We want to have the chance to escape the pressing, also with short passes, and not only with long shots from him. So, he did very well.

“He kept his composure. He kept calm.

“This is basically what we demand of him. He stayed calm, kept his focus.

“It’s like, always a team effort, and I think he’s happy to share this with at least the defenders in front of him.

“But with a defensive approach that we make it the least saves possible from him, but he’s doing good.

“Well done, congratulations. Fantastic achievement.”

On Tuesday night, Thomas Tuchel lead England to World Cup qualification with two games to spare after a 5-0 win in Latvia.

A Harry Kane double adds to goals in either half from Anthony Gordon and Eberechi Eze plus a Maksims Tonisevs own goal.

England boss Thomas Tuchel, speaking to ITV Sport: “Brilliant. Such a good mood in the dressing room. It feels very different because it is our dream to go to America and now we made it with another good performance and top result. Very happy.

“We are dominant in games, we are hungry. We have a lot of ball wins in the opponent’s half. It is good. We are on our way.

“It is a club feel because we play very aggressive with a high press. It is a very physical game. Everyone needs to buy into the idea because otherwise you cannot press so high. The guys train on a high level and the group is a very good group and it is a pleasure to coach them. Step by step we are getting there.”

On fans: “I got some stick in the first half but fair enough and well done, good sense of humour and no problem. It was brilliant support from start to finish.”

On Harry Kane and being up there with best strikers he’s coached: “He is on top of the list. He is in top shape mentally and physically and full of confidence.”

Tuchel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: “It is never easy, even if it looks easy. We put a lot of work in. They played with a lot of short passes, and we expected more long balls, but the reaction was good.

“Another excellent team performance. It is a special moment – it rarely comes that you qualify for a World Cup.

“The mood is very good and it is all smiles and music. It is a moment to enjoy.

“It means a lot and it is different. You cannot create it artificially. It is beautiful to see what it means to the players. The way we won, first of all, gives us a lot of satisfaction. Six wins and six clean sheets. We are there. It is a special evening. You can feel it in the staff and the players.”

Tuchel, speaking in the post-match news conference: “We had in the group six matches and we won all six and we didn’t concede a goal. It’s a special moment. We stepped up in the last two camps.

On England fans, after he criticised the atmosphere at Wembley on Thursday: “I got a bit of stick in the first half and I was almost in every song. Well done, I take it, good sense of humour, I take it and accept it.”

On whether he will make changes for England’s final two group games: “Now we know we’re qualified I’m not sure if this changes anything in the nomination process. Now is the moment to enjoy it, you can feel it in the dressing room. It’s a very special moment and it’s not a daily thing that we qualify for the World Cup and we did that today. Harry [Kane] just gave a speech where he said everyone will be ready to keep this going in November and no-one will take this for granted.

“Maybe it will give us the chance to try stuff, but we will stay competitive and we want to win both matches. We owe it to ourselves and owe it to our fans. We need to keep going and what we are building is very precious and we will keep building.”

Tuchel, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live on his plans for the remaining two World Cup qualifiers: “You need to give me some time to think about it. Harry [Kane] just said in the dressing room: ‘Let’s keep this thing going in November guys.’

“This is my feeling – we are building something together. Everyone will be delighted to be back in camp. Let’s see, we have some time to decide.”

On adapting the style of play at the World Cup: “Need to adapt to the conditions. It is different if you play at 40 degrees in the afternoon or 8 degrees in the rain. It will come naturally as you cannot sprint the same amount.

“The players buy into it [the style of play]. We play a running game and this reflects the English football culture. We will adapt it when we need to adapt it.

“It is 18 points and six clean sheets, so it is a special moment. If it looks easy, it is never easy in football.

“The way we did it, it is nice to see because they play with a lot of effort. They don’t just rely on their talent, and we work hard for their goals.”

Tuchel on fans joking with him about his comments on England fans’ support: “They had a reason today from the last comment and that is fair enough. It was creative and made me smile. It is British humour and I can take it, no harm done.

“The support today was brilliant and we are very sure the support in America will be brilliant. We need it as it makes such a difference for the players.

“We want to make the fans proud and happy, they should be happy to watch us and able to identify with the way we play.”

On working with Harry Kane: “It is a pleasure. He is in excellent shape, mentally and physically. Everything is fine.”

On Anthony Gordon: “It was a very good performance. Anthony deserved to stay in the team.

“He was clinical today with the first goal and that calmed our nerves. Well played again.”

Here’s how fans reacted as Everton call out ITV pundit Lee Dixon for a comment he made about Jordan Pickford during the Latvia v England match…

@grandoldteam: The sooner @itvfootball leg him the better. Truly awful. Makes your ears bleed.

@lawrenzo7: Looks for every possibility to belittle Pickford and down play what he is doing because he’s better than his pal David Seaman and he can’t handle it

@AndyHE29: How’s this for feedback @LeeDixon2? Disrespecting one of Englands biggest clubs

@thebluesoccers: All in for doing more of this. Make it a thing. These clowns need calling out more often.

@ThomoLFC: Big clubs wouldn’t get wound up by a Lee Dixon comment if you ask me

@EvertonAllSorts: About time we started fighting back been too soft for too long. Love this

@toffeebyrne: Do more of this. Call people out for bad mouthing the club and our players. Yes admin. YES.

@SheedyEFC: He just hates Everton and he has a real downer on Jordan Pickford for some bizarre reason never has a good word to say about him!

@Tom_efc1: Lee Dixon slanders Jordan Pickford & Everton every single England game. About time the club did this

@HJJ92_: About time the club started sticking up for itself again, Dixon constantly takes swipes at us & Pickford on comms.

@stuturnips: He’s a modern day Mark Lawrenson. Sounds like him, both dinosaurs , incredibly boring and needs to be put out to pasture.

@mkirbs_1878: See the thing is, if your happy with 30+years of mediocricy, relegation battles and bringing DVD’s out for finishing 7th. Then that’s the perception you give yourself 🤷‍♂️

@HLTCO: The official Everton account clapping back at Lee Dixon and tagging him into the tweet after he asked why Pickford hadn’t moved to a “bigger club”. An inspiring level of pettiness on show.

@HowardParr3: And, amongst countless other things, more top-flight matches than ANY football club, in ANY country, on the PLANET 💙👍🏽
