With all eyes falling on the Allianz on Saturday evening, Bayern Munich collected another heavyweight scalp as they clinched a 2-1 victory at home against bitter domestic foes Borrusia Dortmund.
Embarking on what has been a sensational run since opening up the new campaign, Vincent Kompany’s defending champions opened the scoring in the 22nd-minute as England skipper Harry Kane was first to Joshua Kimmich’s corner and nodded home his 21st goal from his 12 match for club and country.
Widening their buffer at the top of the Bundesliga standings to five points, the German giants doubled their advantage with just 11 minutes left as ex-Crystal Palace ace Michael Olise bundled the ball over the line from close range.
While Dortmund might have set up a shock grandstand finish as Germany international Julian Brandt turned home Julian Ryerson’s cross in the final six minutes, Bayern dragged themselves over the finishing line and extended on their 100% start to proceedings.
Laying down another early title marker at the Allianz and underlining why they are universally regraded as a landslide contender to defend their domestic crown, we have taken a look at the main talking points from Sunday’s heavyweight showdown.
Bayern breezing their way to more Bundesliga dominance
While there might have been some raised eyebrows around the Allianz last summer following Kompany’s arrival in Munich, Saturday’s hosts have embarked on a sensational rise under the guidance of the former Burnley boss.
Recapturing their Bundesliga crown at a canter last season, Bayern have their sights firmly set on shattering even more records this time around and they now hold a five-point buffer over the chasing pack.
Flying out of the traps since opening up the new campaign and marking their return from October’s international break with a heavyweight scalp on home soil, Bayern are the only club among Germany’s elite who can boast a 100% start to proceedings.
In fact, continuing on from their Super Cup success against Stuttgart on August 16th, Kompany’s superstar squad have won all of their first 11 competitive appearances across all competitions.
Already installed as a monumental favourite to successfully defend their Bundesliga title this season, Bayern have also gained a fearsome reputation for their free-scoring performances in the final third.
King Kane does it again
Finally getting his hands on a maiden piece of silverware last season, there is no doubt that Kane has underlined his status as the Allianz’s poster boy since complying a blockbuster move from Tottenham back in the summer of 2023.
Opening the scoring here in his usual clinical fashion, the England skipper has only continued to shatter a string of records since opening up the new campaign.
Openly discussing earlier in the month that he would be keen on signing a bumper new contract extension with Kompany’s side, Kane has further cemented his spot as one of the modern era’s most clinical number nines.
With an air of inevitability around him this year, the 32-year-old is remarkably averaging a goal almost every 52 minutes this season, and has 104 goals in 107 appearances since he joined Bayern from Tottenham in 2023.
Already registering a staggering 21 goals for club and country in his first 12 competitive appearances so far this season, Kane has also notched 12 Bundesliga strikes and has recorded seven more player in the division.
Silver medal might have to be enough for BVB
Signing off the 2025/26 by winning all of their final six appearances across all competitions, Borussia Dortmund got proceedings underway back in August widely regarded to be Bayern’s main title foes this time around.
Watching Bayer Leverkusen drastically fail to find their feet since Xabi Alonso left the BayArena over the summer, BVB know that it could be their sole responsibility to push Bayern as far as they can this season.
Although Saturday’s guests might have missed out on the chance to spring an iconic upset here, Niko Kovac’s camp should take plenty of positives from their start to the new campaign.
Causing Bayern some headaches during the second-half and setting up a late grandstand finish at the Allianz, Dortmund’s 2-1 loss here was the first defeat that Kovac’s side have suffered across any format so far this season.
Getting October underway with a thumping 4-1 Champions League romp against Spanish outfit Athletic Bilbao, BVB will be next seen in midweek when they travel to Copenhagen for another European night under the lights.
