Latest updates amid Sheffield Wednesday crisis, players to leave, potential Rohl replacement

We look at the latest updates amid the current Sheffield Wednesday crisis, players expected to leave, and a potential Danny Rohl replacement.

On the 30th of June, it was reported that Sheffield Wednesday players and staff face delayed wage payments for the third time this year, with no guaranteed timeline for resolution, though the club aims to clear outstanding payments within two weeks.

Unpaid players can give notice to terminate contracts and become free agents starting July 1st. Some under 21s players and staff have received payments, but many non-football staff remain unpaid. An emergency funding process is available, but not all requests may be met. The club apologised, and operations continue, with players training and set to report to St George’s Park next week.

On the 1st of July, Rob Staton, Joe Crann and Alex Miller kept fans updated, saying Sheffield Wednesday face a severe financial crisis, with many first-team and non-footballing staff unpaid, allowing players to issue 15-day notices to terminate contracts. Some players have handed in their 15-day notice in response to ongoing pay issues at the club, unknown how many have done so or plan to do so.

Some of the non-playing staff at Sheffield Wednesday have been paid £700 of their wages, which is what happened last month.

Barry Bannan and Callum Paterson are reportedly no longer with the club, Akin Famewo also said to be a free agent, while most U21 players have been paid. Talented teenager Will Grainger has signed a scholarship despite interest from other clubs.

If unpaid for two consecutive months, players can submit notices, and the club has 15 days to settle payments.

Several players are expected to issue notices today, though the exact number is unclear. Similar issues occurred during Covid, but no players left then.

Sheffield Wednesday are considering internal options for their managerial position as current manager Danny Röhl negotiates his potential exit, with 40 days until their season opener against Leicester.

Assistant coach Henrik Pedersen is seen as a candidate, with Brentford thought to be interested in making him part of Keith Andrews’s new coaching team. The Star report that Henrik is however open to staying in South Yorkshire.

Andy Holdsworth, a respected coach at the club since 2018, who has been managing first-team training sessions recently.

Promoting from within, possibly on a short-term basis, could be the solution as off-field issues continue, following the club’s history of appointing internal figures like Lee Bullen and Neil Thompson as caretaker managers.

HLTCO spoke the current situation, tweeting on the 1st of July: “Sheffield Wednesday players could be set to walk out of the club en masse after the club failed to pay the full squad their wages for the third time in just four months.

“FIFA regulations state that players can terminate their contracts by given written notice if they don’t receive their contract salary for two successive months.

“I really feel for Wednesday fans in this, their club is one of the biggest and most historic in English football and it’s being run in absolute chaos by Dejphon Chansiri.”

Then in a further post, HLTCO explains: “Sheffield Wednesday are facing further disciplinary action from the EFL and a possible player walkout after failing to pay the squad’s wages for a third time in just four months.

“The Guardian reporting this morning, they have learned that some of the club’s younger players received their June salaries on Monday, but not all of Danny Rose’s squad were paid, putting the club in breach of EFL regulations and at risk of losing players on free transfers.

“Sheffield Wednesday are believed to have contacted the affected players and expressed their apologies and pledging to pay them in full, but that does not guarantee a payment date.

“And under FIFA player status regulations, any player who has not received their contracted salary on the due date for two successive months has the opportunity to terminate their contract by giving them notice in writing.

“That does mean that Sheffield Wednesday fans are in the state of limbo at the moment as to exactly where their plans are going to be come the start of next season, because technically the club themselves have breached the contract put in front of those particular individuals.

“And you look at the situation with Danny Rohl, it is highly likely that he and his coaching staff will be moving on before the new season gets underway. Just a desperate situation.

“We all know well, I say we all know, I know, and a vast majority of people, particularly amongst the Sheffield Wednesday fan base are well aware of Chansiri’s numerous thoughts.

“I did a video on it on my YouTube channel, which you can go back and watch if you are, that way inclined about the multiple different issues that have cropped up throughout his ownership of Sheffield Wednesday.

“You know, I’m not suggesting any club has a god given right to be looked after any better than others, others, but they are a huge and historic football club.

“And to see them being run-in the fashion they are by Dejphon Chansiri, it’s just embarrassing, to be quite honest with you.

“You know, players not being paid their wages when they have signed that contract in good faith, when they play for a club as historic as Sheffield Wednesday, it’s just beggars belief.

Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust call for boycott of official merchandise and retail sold by club

“You know, I’ve seen plenty of their fans almost desperate to see Jon Textor come in and take over after he decided to cash in his chips and move on from Crystal Palace.

“And whilst I personally would not wish Jon Textor my worst enemy as an owner, I can certainly understand why they do feel utterly exhausted by the ongoing situation and desperate to see a change in the boardroom for someone that is a more steady hand at the wheel and someone who isn’t going to indulge in chaos at every single turn. So keep your eye on that Sheffield Wednesday story.

“It doesn’t appear like it’s one which is going to calm down anytime soon, but it is an absolute shambles.

“And I do feel desperately sorry for Sheffield Wednesday and their supporters because, you know, you don’t want to be going into any period knowing that your players are not being paid.

“But when you have an owner that is looking to sell, who has been so divisive, so petty, and so childish throughout his entire time in charge, and then you risk running into a new season without a management staff, with players able to walk out, it would leave you feeling utterly lost, really, as a supporter and wondering why you put so much time and energy into following that football club up and down the country.

“And I’m sure many thousands of them this morning are questioning what exactly is going on as they have been all summer long.”

@Jack_Heeley96: £780 to watch u21’s every week is wild #swfc

@ilsonowl: If this is the case & we r going 2 b playing our U21’s. Imagine the damage 2 these young players confidence getting tonked week in week out, because that’s what will happen. They’ll get every Wednesdayite’s support, but this is brutally unfair on them.

@swfcmunch: Under 21 manager taking over first team with under 21 players all because the chairman is a wanker #swfc #chansiriout

@SamNevin98: Perfect plan from DC. Bring in the u-21 coach, only pay the u-21 players so they become the first teamers. That lineup first game of the season is gonna be CRAZY 🤣 #swfc

@Afoxich: Andy Holdsworth’s barmy army! #SWFC

@danielbriddon8: Why are people shocked that the u21 manager is in contention for the job when our squad is going to be mainly u21 players??

@OwlSheffield: On another note I like many be going to watch #Hallamfc Nxt season again, won’t be spending money #swfc

@benswfc15: 1867-2025 #swfc

@mark_flemdog: “I will not do anything to damage the club” – Dejphon Chansiri

@LewisLegdon98: For the sake of others just accept whatever the next offer Is for the club. And if there’s something in the making tell your employees and players that. Making this dark hole even bigger for any potential new owners not just himself

@stevie1953: Does EFL run a 5 a side league?

@swfcjackk: how on earth have the EFL not got heavily involved and got a grip on this situation yet? absolutely embarrassing

@joelgardiner__: Fair play to them. Go and get paid lads and good luck – chansiri a disgrace and I can’t see it ending any time soon. It’s actual so so sad to see what happening

@teddyatswfc: Solidarity with every single one of the players or non footballing staff that intend to do this 💪🏻 I’d hope to think most of the fanbase stand with them. #EnoughIsEnough
