Tributes pour in after Liverpool player Diogo Jota dies in tragic car accident aged 28

Tributes pour in from the world of football as Liverpool player Diogo Jota dies in a tragic car accident aged 28.

He and his brother André Silva sadly passed away early this morning in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora, MARCA first reported.

The accident occurred at at mile 40 (kilometer 65) of the A-52, near the region of Sanabria, near Zamora.

The Liverpool player died when the vehicle he was traveling in with his brother André, a 26-year-old professional footballer with Portuguese second-tier club Penafiel, went off the road, causing a fire.

The Guardia Civil has said to BBC Sport that Jota and his brother died at about 00:30 local time on Thursday.

They said that their car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow-out while overtaking another vehicle and then caught fire.

The tragic news comes just two weeks after Jota married his long-term girlfriend Rute Cardoso in Porto.

A statement from Zamora Provincial Council read: “Two young people died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the Consortium) responded.

“The vehicle caught fire, and the flames spread to the vegetation. They were 28 and 26 years old. RIP.”

“The Portuguese Football Federation (FPT) and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated,” said Pedro Proenca, head of the FPT.

“Much more than an amazing player, with almost 50 international appearances for the national team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all team-mates and opponents, someone with an infectious joy and a reference in the community itself.”

Liverpool wrote: “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.

“The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.

“Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.

“We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Diogo’s former club Wolves tweeted: “We are heartbroken.

“Diogo was adored by our fans, loved by his teammates and cherished by everyone who worked with him during his time at Wolves. The memories he created will never be forgotten.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends and loved ones of Diogo and his brother, Andre.

“You will be truly missed, and always remembered.”
