It will take a “real decent fee” for Rangers to secure the services of a midfielder targeted for Danny Rohl, amidst interest from elsewhere.
Rohl has revitalised Rangers
Even at the season’s halfway point, it has already been a campaign of two halves for Rangers. Rohl has overseen a complete shift in mood and momentum and one defeat in just 13 league matches has seen the club rise to second in the Premiership table.
This form is made all the more impressive when consideration is given to the fact that ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl is yet to recruit any new players to his side, though this is something that will surely change. Speaking ahead of his side’s 2-0 win against Aberdeen, Rohl said:
“So far, we have taken a lot of points without new signings. This is also important because I see how much our players are growing, how much self-confidence they have, how many things they’re doing right. But you have to be hungry and you have to be ambitious also in the market.”
Since the window opened, Rangers have been linked with a number of incomings as they prepare themselves to maintain a title push that, just months ago, appeared impossible. Rohl has worked out a favoured first team at Ibrox, something that the German can now bolster with new additions.
Rohl is keen to reinforce his midfield, particularly as star man Nico Raskin continues to be linked with a departure. As one of Rangers’ best players, the Belgian would simply need to be replaced were he to leave. Be it for that reason or to otherwise add numbers to their squad, the Gers reportedly hold an interest in Silas Andersen.
‘Decent fee’ needed for Andersen
At 21 years old, Andersen has emerged as an exciting midfield prospect with BK Hacken in Sweden, who he joined in 2025 from Utrecht. Standing well over six-feet-tall, the Danish youth international has a physical profile that would, at least on paper, suit Scottish football well.
Under-23s football scout Antonio Mango has, in the past, described Andersen as a player with “relentless persistence, defensive discipline and smart positioning,” and a “nice balance of defensive determination and composed distribution with the ball”.
Now, as per Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, it will not be easy to pry Andersen away from Sweden this January, nor would it be for a cheap price.
“[BK Hacken] want to keep hold of [Andersen], so it would take a real decent fee for Rangers to sign him. There’s also reported interest from Celtic as well, so it could be an Old Firm fight for Andersen if it does come down to that.
“Both Celtic and Rangers are looking at him. He’s a young midfielder who has got the physical attributes to come in to Scotland and be a success. If it comes down to between Celtic and Rangers, let’s see who puts up the right offer to convince BK Hacken to sell him, but there’s no doubt that Rangers will be looking to strengthen that midfield area.”
Celtic eyeing Rangers hijack to meet O’Neill’s transfer demand
The Bhoys could look to usurp their rivals to add some steel in the engine room.
As O’Rourke noted, Celtic are also keen on bringing Andersen to Scotland. Martin O’Neill is, once again, in charge of the Bhoys following Wilfried Nancy’s disastrous 33 days in charge; a reign that, somehow, rivals that of Martin at Rangers for how misguided it seemed to be.
Rangers are well-stocked in midfield on paper, though it is clear that Rohl does not favour either Joe Rothwell or Kieran Dowell, who have scarcely featured for the German.
Should Rangers be successful in signing Andersen, then, on one hand, they have denied their arch-rivals a promising addition. On the other, they would have recruited an immensely promising talent who could prove to be a perfect component of Rohl’s three-man midfield.
