Rangers “pushing to sign” Skov Olsen alternative to finally replace Cerny

They say never fall in love with a loan player, although Rangers have repeatedly done so in recent years, with short-term deals proving arguably the club’s most fruitful venture of late.

After mixed fortunes for high-profile talents such as Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo, the Ibrox side have enjoyed hit after hit since then, with Malik Tillman, Abdallah Sima and Vaclav Cerny all dazzling in Glasgow.

Cerny, in particular, was a consistent menace for the Light Blues in 2024/25, racking up 27 goals and assists in 52 games, while securing cult hero status for those Old Firm antics.

Frustratingly, like those before him, the Czech winger’s stay was short and sweet, with the Gers turning their attention toward an even briefer stay, should current Wolfsburg man Andreas Skov Olsen arrive until the end of the season.

The 40-cap Denmark international would more than have his merits, although he doesn’t appear to be the club’s only attacking target.

Even after a turbulent summer window, the Gers’, to their credit, have been unperturbed, already making significant strides to strengthen Danny Rohl’s ranks this week.

A deal for Skov Olsen, signed from Club Brugge on a £12m deal only a year ago, would arguably be the most exciting of the lot, not least considering he recorded 79 goal involvements in just 124 games in Belgium.

Rangers are looking to bring the 26-year-old in on loan until the end of the season, with the winger said to be open to the move, ahead of what could be a swift decision.

The Wolfsburg man isn’t the only winger being targeted this month, however, with journalist Rudy Galetti outlining that the Gers are “pushing to sign” DAC Dunajská Streda winger Damir Redzic.

Galetti reports that Rohl’s side aren’t alone in their interest in the 22-year-old, however, with Red Bull Salzburg, FC Copenhagen and Olympiakos also in the mix.

The Hungarian – who began his career at Ferencvaros – made the move to Slovakian on an initial loan back in 2023.

Why Redzic could finally replace Cerny

Among the more frustrating elements of Rangers’ summer business has been the woes of their new wideman, with Djeidi Gassama already being linked with a move to Spain, after scoring just one Premiership goal all season.

Oliver Antman, meanwhile, hasn’t scored at all in 20 appearances following his £4m switch from Go Ahead Eagles, with neither man truly proving that they can fill Cerny’s void on the right flank.

Mikey Moore, of course, has begun to dazzle off the left, although it is that opposite side which appears in drastic need of an upgrade. Enter, Redzic.

Skov Olsen might be the marquee name, although the Hungary international is a real exciting talent in his own right, scoring seven goals in 14 games in the Slovakian league this season.

The versatile attacker can operate centrally or off the left, although six of those seven strikes have come in a right-wing or right midfield berth, as per Transfermarkt, ensuring he could be the man to take on Cerny’s mantle down that side.

With 14 goals in 49 games in total for his current side, after chalking up ten in 37 for Soroksar, the promising winger is a real goal threat, ensuring he could breathe new life into Rohl’s stuttering forward line.

It is telling that James Tavernier still leads the way with eight goals this season at Ibrox from his right-back berth, with no player currently looking close to getting anywhere near Cerny’s 18-goal haul from last term.

The beauty of Redzic is that he is also something of a creative spark, alongside providing a finishing touch himself, having averaged 2.1 key passes per game this season in Slovakia’s top tier, as per Sofascore.

For comparison, Cerny was only just ahead for the Glasgow side last term, averaging 2.5 in the Premiership, with that likeness – even while being predominantly right-footed – ensuring Redzic could well be the solution Rangers have been looking for.

It is not yet clear whether this would be a loan or permanent move, although regardless of whether Skov Olsen does arrive or not, the youngster could prove another worthy upgrade for the right wing at Ibrox.
