Teams and structure
Eight teams are participating in the 2025 tournament: Oval Invincibles, Birmingham Phoenix, Southern Brave, London Spirit, Welsh Fire, Manchester Originals, Trent Rockets, and Northern Superchargers. The competition will include 32 league games, followed by an Eliminator and the Final. This structure ensures a comprehensive format, allowing each team ample opportunity to advance to the knockout stages.
Format and innovations
The Hundred, introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2021, features a distinctive format where each team plays a single 100-ball innings instead of the traditional overs. This competition incorporates several innovations, including a 25-ball powerplay period, during which only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle, and a strategic timeout of 90 seconds for tactical discussions. These changes are designed to offer a quicker, more family-friendly version of the game, aiming to attract new audiences. The tournament’s format and high-profile international stars have contributed to its significant viewership and fan engagement.
