Asia Cup 2025 Strong Indian Players Likely to Miss Official Squad

From KL Rahul to Yashasvi Jaiswal, explore the list of strong Indian players who may miss the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE, and the potential reasons for their exclusion.

The Indian Premier League, as a tournament, has given countless players who have gone on to represent the Indian team in some or the other format. Given that the IPL is played in T20 format, numerous players emerge who are so good that in a few months, they eventually end up playing for the Indian team. Yes, such is the quality of the current Indian team that they can play two in parallel, and both can end up in the Final.

The Indian Cricket team is currently taking a well-deserved break of almost a month after a successful India vs England 2025 Test series. However, the next assignment is a big one for the Indian team as it is a reunion of India vs Pakistan via the Asia Cup 2025. The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled from September 09 to September 28, 2025, but the official squad for the tournament is yet to be announced by the BCCI.

The official squad can only include 15 players; hence, there will be many players who will miss the tournament even as they have been performing well in the T20 format. Previously, we looked at 15 players who might make it to the official squad for the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025, but in this article, we take a look at the updated 15-member squad list that is likely to miss the Asia Cup 2025 for some or the other reason.

Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Shubmn Gill in T20Is

Starting with the openers, the biggest name that is likely to miss the Asia Cup 2025 is Yashasvi Jaiswal. Countless cricket websites have been reporting that Team India are contemplating playing Shubman Gill as the opener in the Asia Cup 2025 ahead of Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Jaiswal might be asked to focus only on red-ball cricket. If this is true, it’s huge news, and the one that might not benefit the Indian team in the near future.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, as you know, is a naturally aggressive batter, and his batting suits T20 and ODI cricket more than Test cricket. Even as Jaiswal has played test cricket first, and has done well there, his batting is more suited for the T20 format – the proof of which is his performance in the Indian Premier League. While Jaiswal deserves a place in the T20 squad above Gill, the only reason Gill might get selected in T20Is above Jaiswal is because Gill is looked at as the successor of Virat Kohli, and is already in a leadership role in two of the three formats.

Having said that, Gill isn’t an amateur batter in T20s by any means. He has done well in the Indian Premier League over the years, and has also improved his strike rate considerably this year. So, even as Team India decide to select Shubman Gill in T20Is, it is completely fine and logical. However, Gill’s selection shouldn’t be at the expense of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has also been preferred above Shubman Gill in T20Is off-late.

No Shreyas Iyer in the Indian T20I Team

Other than Yashasvi Jaiswal, the other big name that is likely to miss the Asia Cup 2025 is Shreyas Iyer. Iyer has been out of contention in T20Is for a good amount of time now. However, his performance in the latest IPL 2025 made a huge noise, and it is the one that we cannot ignore. If Shreyas Iyer doesn’t feature in the Indian T20Is team, it is a loss for Team India. But is looks like India are contemplating selecting Rinku Singh and Tilak Varma above Shreyas Iyer for the moment.

Other than these two, the Indian team will mostly miss the services of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan among other batters. Given that Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma are more than competent batters, the services of Gaikwad and Sudharsan won’t be a miss. However, among wicket-keepers, Rishabh Pant will be a big miss given he is injured, and Jitesh Sharma is likely to get a nod ahead of Pant and KL Rahul. KL Rahul, meanwhile, would have been solid for the middle-order role if India actually perceived him for that role.

Coming to All-rounders, India are likely to select three solid all-rounders present in India currently, and those are Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Washington Sundar. These are sure-shot starters, and their alternatives, Krunal Pandya, Riyan Parag, and Nitish Reddy, are also not so good to get a nod above the primary three. Having said that, Nitish Reddy has shown a lot of promise, and would have come in handy on non-sub-continent pitches.

Potent Bowlers to Miss Asia Cup 2025.

Coming to the good bowlers that are likely to miss the Asia Cup 2025, we have Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Khaleel Ahmed among pacers, and Ravi Bishnoi and Yuzvendra Chahal among spinners. However, India already have a solid bowling attack with Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana. While there is no inch of doubt on the first four bowlers, Harshit Rana isn’t a sure-shot starter, and instead of him, India can look to add either Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna.

So, that’s the strong players list that is likely to miss out of the final Asia Cup 2025 squad for Team India. Overall, out of the 15 players, India will miss the services of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Nitish Reddy, Shivam Dube, and Prasidh Krishna. These players have been doing well in the IPL off-late, but with a squad limit of 15 players, it’s unfortunate they won’t make the cut for the official squad.
