Sunil Gavaskar holds the historic distinction of being the first Indian captain to lead a team to an ODI tournament win on Australian soil. MS Dhoni is the second, and most recent, Indian captain to win a major multi-team ODI title in Australia, securing the 2007-08 CB Series by defeating the dominant Australian side in the best-of-three finals.

Virat Kohli: The Bilateral Series Pioneer and Individual Record Setting Skipper

Virat Kohli is the first and only Indian captain to lead the team to a direct, head-to-head bilateral ODI series win against Australia in Australia (2018-19) (2-1). This is a unique achievement.

Virat is also the only Indian captain with a 50% or higher win rate against Australia in Australia ODIs.

He holds the highest win percentage in the bilateral series format against Australia in their home country, and he is also the joint first to have the most Test wins in Australia aming Indian captains.

The Other Captains: Contests and Win/Loss Ratios Down Under

Sourav Ganguly led India to the final of the 2003–04 Tri-series but lost the final series 2-0 to Australia. His captaincy win/loss ratio in all ODIs in Australia was 0.800 (4 Won, 5 Lost).

Kapil Dev also reached the final of the 1985–86 World Series Cup but lost the best-of-three final series to Australia. His captaincy win/loss ratio in all ODIs in Australia was 0.714 (5 Won, 7 Lost).

Virat Kohli is the only Indian captain to score an ODI century in Australia: 104 vs. Australia in the 3rd ODI of the 2018-19 series at Adelaide Oval on January 15, 2019.

In terms of bowling, Kapil Dev tops the wicket-taking chart in Australia as Indian captain with 20 wickets. He is followed by Sourav Ganguly, whose medium-pace bowling yielded a total of 6 scalps.
