In an unexpected move last month, the legendary all-rounder from the West Indies, Andre Russell, made a major decision by leaving the IPL as a player and taking on the role of the power coach for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
Many fans were shocked by the announcement, but what impressed them even more was the candidness of Andre Russell about his struggles. The sight of edited photos of him dressed in the uniforms of other franchises made him very uncomfortable, as KKR had already decided to let him go.

He was so troubled by the thought of wearing anything other than KKR’s purple and gold that he sometimes could not sleep at night. And he finally made the decision to retire from the IPL with the franchise.
While announcing his new role as KKR’s power coach, Russell said: “You keep seeing yourself photoshopped in different jerseys (of other teams) when you are going through social media. I felt weird to see myself in any color other than purple and gold, and those thoughts kept going through my head, leading me to a few sleepless nights.”
For over ten years, the Jamaican cricketer Andre Russell was a major factor in the success of the Kolkata Knight Riders. His powerful hitting was responsible for many sixes, but at the same time, he posed a threat to the batsmen with his bowling and might singlehandedly change the outcome of the match in his favor. Besides, KKR always stood by him during his ups and downs and also contributed to his fitness regime.
Moreover, the KKR not only allowed the former West Indies captain to participate in the IPL but also included him in their global teams, such as the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the International League T20, the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, and the LA Knight Riders in America’s Major League Cricket.

Russell’s last season performance was below what was anticipated. Thirteen matches, 167 runs, and eight wickets were his statistics. These figures were below-a-par. Nevertheless, this was not the primary reason for his release. It was just a part of the KKR’s larger scheme that was unfolding in the background.
The franchise’s decision to go ahead with KKR’s release was influenced by the ongoing decision process in Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as well. There were whispers that CSK was preparing to let Matheesha Pathirana, a star bowler on a massive contract of INR 13 crores, go. The franchise indeed did it at the very last minute.
The step would enable the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to acquire a vast sum of money through auction. To be very sure of getting the top players, they had to go with a sum above INR 40 crore. The Kolkata-based franchise decided to cut down on their spending and remain in the competition by being imaginative while thinking. Keeping Russell would mean a very little budget for them.
