Vaishnavi Sharma caught abusing during the India vs Sri Lanka clash

India played the fourth T20I of the series against Sri Lanka at Thiruvananthapuram. The Indian women entered the match having won the series already with three consecutive wins. Batting first, Smriti Mandhana got her first half-century of the series, and Shafali Verma followed with her third of the series.

Lastly, India climbed up to a massive 221 in their 20 overs, with Richa Ghosh playing a stylish knock of 40 runs off just 16 balls. Mandhana also went past the 10000 run mark in women’s international cricket.

During the Lankan innings, when wickets were not coming easily, and the Indian bowlers were failing to limit the chase, Vaishanavi Sharma got a golden opportunity to run out Harshita Samarawickrama, but due to her throw being far from the wickets, the batter crossed the mark before Ghosh could reach out to the stumps.

The cameras moved the focus on the young cricketer’s face, and she was caught abusing out of frustration. However, she immediately realized it had been caught on camera and covered her lips in shame.

Who is Vaishnavi Sharma, India’s rising star?

Vaishanavi Sharma is a 20-year-old young spinner from Madhya Pradesh who came into the spotlight with her performance in the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup. She was one of the key members of the title-winning Under-19 women’s team in the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup.

Born in Gwalior, Vaishnavi had already scripted history by becoming the first cricketer from the Chambal region to represent India in senior-level cricket. Back in 2022-23, she had received the Jagmohan Dalmiya Trophy for Best Woman Cricketer in Junior domestic cricket.

Trained at the Tansen Cricket Academy, Vaishnavi started her career from Chambal and has now made it this far to the national setup. She, alongside G. Kamalini, her Under-19 teammate, made it to the India team and played the first few matches alongside fellow MP teammate Kranti Gaud.

She played a major role in the Under-19 T20 World Cup for India, claiming 17 wickets in 6 games, which included wickets against teams like England and South Africa, and a 5-wicket haul as well.

The momentum was carried into the domestic tournament, where she picked 21 wickets in the senior women’s T20 trophy and then emerged as the top wicket-taker of the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal T20 tournament with another 12 wickets.

Following her inclusion in the team, Vaishnavi Sharma has played in all matches for India in this Sri Lanka series. She managed to hunt for 4 wickets in four games, with her best figures of 2/24 coming in the last game in Thiruvananthapuram.
