The 2025 field hockey season generated a lot of memorable games, but many of them were did not follow the usual formula — overtime, shootout, or a late lead change. A handful of games instead stood out because the result represented something more than just the drama on the field. Here’s what we cobbled together:
12. Hammonton St. Joseph’s (N.J.) 5, Hammonton 4 (OT)
Oct. 23, 2025
Cape-Atlantic Tournament
The best of the New Jersey in-season tournaments this year, it was a game for the ages. Stella Devlin’s overtime goal with just 8.7 seconds left in extra time gave St. Joseph’s the win in what wound up being a tremendous town derby
11. St. Louis John Burroughs (Mo.) 2, St. Louis Villa Duchesne (Mo.) 1, OT
Oct. 31, 2025
Midwest Field Hockey Tournament semifinal
Lila Merlin, a sophomore attacker who has been scoring viral goals throughout her youth career, added another to her resume with an overtime backhand slice that went top bins, sending the Bombers to the championship game
10. San Diego Scripps Ranch (Calif.) 2, La Jolla Bishop’s School (Calif.) 1
Sept. 20, 2025
Semifinal, West Coast Classic
Scripps Ranch would eventually win the WCC tournament later in the day over rival San Diego Torrey Pines (Calif.), but this win over The Bishop’s School would set the table. Notably, The Bishop’s School would not lose another game for the rest of the season
9. Cherry Hill Camden Catholic (N.J.) 3, Palmyra (Pa.) 2 (OT)
Sept. 21, 2025
National High School Invitational
Both of these sides would eventually make their respective state championship finals, and it was Camden Catholic junior Sophia Stazi who would get the overtime goal to win this interstate matchup which was the most dramatic game at this year’s NHSI
8. Uxbridge (Mass.) 8, Somerset-Berkley Regional (Mass.) 1
September 17, 2025
Regular-season game
One year ago, SBR won a matchup with Uxbridge by one goal. But in this meeting of sitting state champions, Uxbridge took a 5-0 halftime lead and never looked back. This was one of three games the Spartans played against defending state champions and this result sent a resounding message throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
7. Whitney Point (N.Y.) 3, Accord Rondout Valley (N.Y.) 2 (OT)
Nov. 16, 2025
NYSPHSAA Class C final
In what turned out to be the final scholastic field hockey game of the year, Whitney Point’s Kylan Smith got a goal from the doorstep to vault the Golden Eagles to their fifth straight state championship
6. Yorktown Tabb (Va.) 3, Poquoson (Va.) 2
Nov. 15, 2025
VHSL Class 3 final
For the record, Tabb scored 180 goals for the 2025 season. But Kira Takahashi-Trader’s two goal involvements late in this game will stand forever as a testament to her skills and game sense. In the middle of the third quarter, she scored a magnificent solo tally on a play starting 93 yards away from the goal. With four minutes left, Takahashi-Trader’s fourth-quarter diagonal pass found teammate Kennedy Parlett for the game-winning marker
5. Smyrna (Del.) 1, Lewes Cape Henlopen (Del.) 0 (OT)
Nov. 7, 2025
DIAA Division 1 final
A year after these two teams played a one-goal thriller in the 2024 final, the Eagles and Vikings met again for this final. Neither team was able to break through in regulation, so the teams went into extra time. It was Smyrna which was able to use the extra space. On the final play, senior Bree Moffett dribbled up the right side, evaded four defenders and passed the ball to the stroke mark. The ball bounced off a teammate’s stick right back to Moffett, who shot the ball into the goal cage to win the state final
4. Uxbridge (Mass.) 7, Watertown (Mass.) 0
Nov. 12, 2025
MIAA Division 3 semifinal
This was probably the most highly anticipated MIAA playoff game since the adoption of the statewide playoff bracket system in 2021. Watertown came in as the defending Division 3 champion, and Uxbridge came in as defending Division 4 titlists. As was the case in many Uxbridge contests in 2025, the Spartans scored first and never let their foot off the gas. Uxbridge had two goals in the second quarter and three in the third, setting sail for the state final later in the week
3. Frederick Linganore (Md.) 4, Westminster (Md.) 3 (2 OT)
Nov. 8, 2025
MPSSAA Class 3A final
While history will show that Jordan Zimmerman’s goal in double overtime gave Linganore its first state championship in three decades, the player to thank was goalkeeper Allena Jaworski. She made a number of stops in a thrill-a-minute ride during the postseason, including the state final. At one point, she made a flopping stop against Westminster to keep the Owls at bay, setting up Linganore’s overtime heroics
2. Newtown Square Episcopal Academy (Pa.) 1, Pottstown Hill School (Pa.) 0
Sept. 12, 2025
Regular-season game
Hill, the best team in the country the last couple of seasons, had a roster of good players for the 2025 campaign, but Episcopal sent a message in this early win. Episcopal would have a fine season, though they fell a game short of winning the PAISAA final
1. Emmaus (Pa.) 3, Malvern Villa Maria (Pa.) 2 (OT)
November 11, 2025
PIAA Class AAA semifinal
For the third season in a row, these two storied programs met in the Class AAA state tournament. Caitlin Connell, the nation’s leading goal-scorer, played her part with a brace, but the result revolved around sophomore Riley Povilaitis. She had been assessed a five-minute yellow at the close of regulation, which meant that overtime started with Villa Maria having a seven-on-six advantage. But three minutes after she got back onto the pitch, her hard crossing pass bounced off a Villa Maria stick into the goal cage, giving the Hornets the thrilling win
