Looking for something unique and completely free to do in Munich? Tucked away in a massive former train depot, Motorworld München is a car lover’s dream and a surprisingly fun destination for families, teens, and even casual visitors. I visited with my son during a Formula 1 weekend.
While we expected to admire some cool cars, we ended up immersed in a buzzing scene filled with live racing energy, rare vehicles, and unforgettable moments. Whether you’re into classic cars, muscle cars, or modern engineering marvels, this is one stop in Munich you don’t want to miss.
A Unique Experience Beyond a Typical Car Museum – Discover Cars For Sale (Yes, For Sale)
We visited Motorworld Munich on our last day in the city, after visiting the Residenz Palace.
This was possible because Motorworld München is open until later (some things inside are closed, but not an issue – I will tell you more about this below).
Even if my feet were hurting me, I did not want to leave without visiting this hidden gem in Munich for car lovers. And I was sure my son will love it too!
I knew from a friend who recommended me to go to Motorworld Munich, that it is housed in a repurposed industrial railway hall in Freimann. So this sprawling 75,000 m² complex is big – and it is an interesting combination of a garage, exhibition, and center for classic and new cars + sales. There are also cafes and an events center! And, of course, souvenir shops – and even some stalls with fun activities for kids.
BTW: be prepared to be VERY tempted to buy some cars. I saw a Corvette and a Challenger + a Rolls Royce that I wanted to buy!
You can buy there new cars, old cars, classic cars, tuned cars, and motorcycles.

Oh, and there is a Formula car on the ceiling!

So Motorworld München is not a museum – it’s a living, breathing automotive lifestyle center. You’ll walk among vintage vehicles, rare sports cars, concept designs, and even dealerships offering some of the cars for sale. You can also see various sports cars, including Formula 1 or rally cars!
I took so many pictures – I love cars so… – that it is very hard to select only a few to include here.
By the way: Do not think that Motorworld Munich is only about cars!
No!
There are motorcycles too! There are a few brands (from various continents) – and yes, you can buy them too!
In fact, there are several motorcycle sellers inside Munich Motorworld! Some I am including here, others I cannot (I actually had to select the bare minimum number of photos – I took so many!)
And we saw a Ferrari bike!
Yes, a bike!
But not any bike!
It was next to a red Mercedes – race car:
If you’re looking for a free car museum in Munich, Motorworld München should be at the top of your list. What makes it different? You’re not stuck behind velvet ropes. Many vehicles are displayed in glass garages, allowing you to admire their beauty up close, and others are rotated regularly, meaning no two visits are quite the same.
To get there, we used public transportation and the MVV app – you will need to walk a bit from the metro – but you get directions from the app or Google Maps.
It is a bit easy to miss – and the exterior is not car-related – there are a few constructions there. But, again, it is inside a repurposed industrial railway hall – so the industrial landscape was to be expected.

But once you are in, if you love cars, you do not know where to look first!
Our Formula 1 Surprise – and What You Might See
We happened to visit during a Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, and the central hall was buzzing with fans watching the race live on large screens. The vibe was electric.

After the race ended, the barriers around one special car – a Ferrari Formula 1 car – were taken down and visitors could walk right up to it. While displays change frequently and this Michael Schumacher car isn’t always on exhibit, it’s moments like these that make Motorworld feel alive and immersive.
It’s the kind of place where you might spot a McLaren next to a Mustang, or a historic rally car parked across from an electric hypercar. Motorworld Munich cars reflect a variety of eras and styles, making every corner of the space worth exploring.
Unexpected Highlights: Muhammad Ali’s Car and Muscle Car Icons

Beyond the high-end modern cars and vintage classics, you’ll also discover a few surprising pieces of cultural history. During our visit, we saw a limousine once owned by Muhammad Ali, tucked among a row of cars.
From sleek 60s Mustangs to bold contemporary builds, the selection caters to every era and taste. And yes, many of these cars are actually for sale – I spotted a few I was seriously tempted to buy.
Perfect for Families and Teens
I visited with my teenage son, and this ended up being one of the most enjoyable stops on our Munich trip. Motorworld is ideal for families traveling with older kids or teens – it’s dynamic, visually exciting, and easy to explore at your own pace.
It’s also one of the best things to do in Munich with teens who love fast cars and real-world experiences. There are even Formula 1 simulators, plus car-spotting challenges that kept us both engaged.
As a whole, it’s one of the most surprising family-friendly Munich attractions, and a great alternative to more traditional museums.
The Hotel Where You Can Sleep Beside Your Car
One of Motorworld’s most unique features is the on-site AMERON München Motorworld Hotel, which offers rooms with a twist: glass garage walls where guests can park and admire their car right from their bed.
While I didn’t stay there this time, I’ve added it to my travel wishlist – not just for the novelty, but because it looks like the perfect blend of comfort and character.
Shops and Souvenirs – Plan Ahead
There are car-themed souvenir shops within the complex, but we arrived late and found most of them closed. If you’re hoping to buy memorabilia or gifts, I recommend going earlier in the day. Some of the merchandise is collector-worthy and ties into the rotating car exhibits.

Final Thoughts – Is Motorworld München Worth Visiting?
Motorworld München was on my original Munich itinerary, and it ended up being a highlight, not just for the cars, but for the vibe, the surprise moments, and the way it connected generations. My son and I bonded over F1 excitement and car trivia, and I found myself reliving memories of watching races and dreaming of sports cars.
If you’re looking for an attraction in Munich that’s off the beaten path, affordable (as in free!), and full of “wow” moments – this is it. I liked our visit here – we spent a few hours! – and I am recommending Motorworld Munich to all car lovers
