Every day, an auto manufacturer seems to release a new electric vehicle. EVs are certainly popular right now. Unlike traditional cars, you can skip the gas pump, but electric vehicles do have to be charged, either at charging stations or at home.
If you’re like me (and most EV owners), you often need to charge your car at public EV charging stations. To make the most of this unavoidable expense, it’s smart to pay with a credit card that earns bonus rewards for EV charging. I stop by a charging station several times a week, and since I can’t avoid the cost, I make sure to maximize my spending by earning extra rewards every time.
Below, I’ve compiled a list of eight of the best cards for EV charging. In addition to these cards making it possible to earn the most rewards on these purchases, none of them have annual fees over $100. In fact, most have no annual fee whatsoever.
Let’s jump into the details.

*There is a combined quarterly spending cap of $2,500; after that, you’ll earn 1% cash back.
Why we like it: The Customized Cash has higher quarterly spending caps than other competitor cards. However, after the first year, there may be better options, as other cards earn an unlimited 3% in rewards on EV charging.

Chase Freedom Flex
Welcome offer: Earn $200 after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
Annual fee: $0.

Earning rates:
Why we like it: This card is a solid option for everyday spending, as you’ll earn at least 1% cash back on all purchases. However, you can do better on EV charging unless it’s part of the 5% quarterly rotating categories. (Activation is required.) The current categories for the third quarter include EV charging, gas, Instacart and select live entertainment.
Plus, if you pair this card with an Ultimate Rewards-earning card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees), you convert cash back to points and have access to Chase’s impressive roster of 14 travel partners.

Citi Strata Premier Card
Welcome offer: Earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening. Based on TPG’s August 2025 valuations, this bonus is worth $1,140.
Annual fee: $95.

Earning rates:
- Earn 10 points per dollar spent on hotels, car rentals and attractions booked through the Citi Travel portal.
- Earn 3 points per dollar spent on purchases in the following categories: air travel, EV charging stations, gas stations, hotels, supermarkets and restaurants (including takeout).
- Earn 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.
Why we like it: For a modest $95 annual fee, you’ll earn an unlimited 3 points per dollar spent on EV charging. Additionally, you’ll earn 3 points per dollar spent at supermarkets. Since most EV chargers are at or near supermarkets, you can do your grocery shopping while charging your car and supercharge your earnings. Plus, this card offers some solid travel protections, and points are fully transferable to any of Citi’s travel partners.
Personally, I am considering adding this card to my wallet next, especially since Citi recently added American Airlines as a transfer partner.

Costco Anywhere Visa Card
Welcome offer: None, but you may be able to receive a welcome offer if you apply in a Costco warehouse.
Annual fee: $0 (Costco membership is required).

Earning rates:
- Earn 5% cash back on gas at Costco and 4% cash back on other gas and EV charging purchases on up to $7,000 in combined spending per year, then 1% cash back thereafter.
- Earn 3% cash back at restaurants and on eligible travel purchases, including Costco Travel.
- Earn 2% cash back on all other Costco purchases.
- Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.
Why we like it: Cardholders can earn 4% cash back on EV charging on up to $7,000 spent per year. Plus, if you shop at Costco frequently, you can earn bonus cash back on any purchases made at the wholesaler.
The only drawback of this card is that it requires a Costco membership, which costs at least $65 per year. Additionally, cash back is only issued once per year, which is not ideal for those who like to use their earned rewards monthly. The cash back you earn is also issued as a reward certificate; to receive cash for your cash back, you’ll have to go into a physical Costco location to redeem the reward certificate.

PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa Signature Card
Welcome offer: Earn 15,000 bonus points after spending $1,500 on purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.
Annual fee: $0.

Earning rates:
- Earn 5 points per dollar spent on gas paid at the pump and at EV charging stations.
- Earn 3 points per dollar spent at supermarkets (including most Target and Walmart locations) and restaurants, and on TV, radio, cable and streaming services.
- Earn 1 point per dollar spent on all other purchases.
Why we like it: EV owners will enjoy earning an unlimited 5 points per dollar spent on EV charging. Plus, the supermarket category includes most Target and Walmart locations, something typically not found on most credit cards. Plus, the card has cellphone protection and no foreign transaction fees, which is almost unheard of to have together on a no-annual-fee card.
The only downside is quite a big one: Points can’t be redeemed for cash back, and there are no transfer partners. Points can only be redeemed for gift cards, shopping or travel booked through PenFed’s rewards portal at a rate of less than 1 cent per point.
That said, you don’t have to be a PenFed member to apply for a credit card.
Wells Fargo Attune Card
Welcome offer: Earn a $100 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
Annual fee: $0.

Earning rates:
- Earn 4% cash back on self-care, including beauty and barbershops; gym memberships and fitness studios; health and beauty spas; and massage parlors.
- Earn 4% cash back on sports, recreation and entertainment.
- Earn 4% cash back on planet-friendly purchases, including antiques and secondhand stores, EV charging stations and public transit (such as buses, ferries and trains).
Why we like it: The Wells Fargo Attune is another excellent cash-back option with no annual fee for EV owners. You’ll earn an unlimited 4% cash back on purchases categorized as “planet-friendly purchases,” including EV charging. Plus, there’s a laundry list of other unique categories usually excluded from bonus earnings that you can earn 4% cash back on.
Additionally, if you pair this card with an Autograph card, you can convert your cash back to points and have access to Wells Fargo’s transfer partners.

Wells Fargo Autograph Card
Welcome offer: Earn 20,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
Annual fee: $0.

Earning rates:

These points can be transferred to Wells Fargo’s small but mighty roster of seven transfer partners.

U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa Signature Card
Welcome offer: Earn a $200 bonus after spending $1,000 on purchases within 90 days of account opening.
Annual fee: $0.

Earning rates:
- Earn 5% cash back on prepaid air, hotel and car reservations booked through the U.S. Bank Rewards Travel Center.
- Earn 5% cash back on up to $2,000 spent in two categories of your choice each quarter, then 1% cash back thereafter. Available categories include cellphone providers, department stores, electronic stores, fast food, furniture stores, ground transportation, gyms and fitness centers, home utilities, movie theaters, select clothing stores, sporting goods stores and TV, internet and streaming.
- Earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.
Why we like it: With this card, you can select two quarterly 5% cash-back categories to use for purchases totaling up to $2,000. This is nice because it allows you to earn an additional 5% on another category, as it is unlikely you’ll spend $2,000 on EV charging per quarter unless you’re a true road warrior.

Consider a flat-rate earning card
If none of the options above appeal to you, consider a flat-rate earning card, also commonly referred to as a catchall card. These cards typically earn the same rate on all purchases, including EV charging, meaning you don’t have to remember bonus categories and ensure you’re using the right card for each purchase.

What if I charge at home?
For EV owners who charge their car at home, their utility company will usually bill them. Therefore, many of the options listed above would most likely only earn 1% in rewards.
If you charge at home most frequently, my pick is the Venmo Credit Card. With this card, you’ll earn 3% cash back in the category you spend the most in, including utilities. You don’t have to select any categories, and Venmo will automatically change this category based on your spending patterns.

This was my go-to EV charging card when I previously lived in a townhome and charged my car in my garage since all my charging costs were funneled through my electric bill.

The U.S. Bank Cash+ is another solid option. You can select home utilities as one of your two quarterly categories and earn 5% cash back on purchases totaling up to $2,000.
Lastly, you could use any of the flat-rate cards mentioned above to cover utility purchases.

Bottom line
Owning an electric vehicle can save you hundreds each year by not having to go to the gas pump. However, you will have to stop at EV charging stations to keep your car powered.
Adding one of these cards to your wallet can ensure you’re maximizing the rewards you earn the next time you plug your car in.
