Our Day Started at Victoria Coach Station :
We arrived early at Victoria Coach Station, and got settled on the air-conditioned coach. The kids loved the USB charging ports for their devices, and the guide gave us a quick rundown of the day’s itinerary. On our way we got to know a little bit history about each place we were visiting and it was so fascinating to hear such tropes of which we had no Idea about. The tours are available in languages English, Spanish or bilingual . We choose an English tour.
Stop 1: Roman Bath
Our first stop was the beautiful city of Bath, and it’s very walkable with kids.
- The coach stopped few steps away from Roman baths which did not required much walking . The best part about doing this tour with Golden Tours is you don’t have to wait in the long lines to enter the Bath, you will be sent inside right away when you reach there.
- Roman Baths were about 2000 years old, originally built by the Romans around 70 AD as a public bathing and social complex, making use of the natural hot springs in the area
- They have free audio tour gadgets for everyone which made it interesting for kids. My kids were amazed to learn about it’s history , the steaming Great Bath and the ancient Roman artifacts.
- There are also plenty of cafés for a quick tea or ice cream if your kids need a treat after all the walking.
Bath’s cobblestone streets are charming but can be tricky with strollers, so bring a compact one if you have little kids.
Stop 2: Stonehenge
Next, we headed to Stonehenge, about an hour and a half away. This stop is fascinating for kids who love mysteries!
- You will be dropped at the visitor center from which you can either do a 20 minute walk to the Stonehenge or hop on their Free shuttle service. We choose the later one.
- Stonehenge are over 5000 years old. That means it was standing long before the pyramids of Egypt were completed. It is still a mystery on how and why they were built or who built it.
- Walking the circular path around the stones was magical, and the kids enjoyed guessing how they were built.
- The visitor center has interactive exhibits explaining the history, which kept the kids engaged.
- There’s a small café for snacks and drinks which is perfect to recharge before our next stop.
I loved that kids could explore safely without feeling rushed, and we got plenty of classic photos with Salisbury Plain as a backdrop.
Stop 3: Windsor Castle
Our last stop was Windsor Castle, and it’s absolutely kid-friendly if you plan ahead.
- This place was the highlight of our trip for kids. I mean who wound’t be excited to see the world’s largest and oldest occupied castle and one of the current residence of King Charles ?
- They have free audio tour gadgets for everyone which made it interesting to learn about the palace history.
- We started by exploring the State Apartments , the art, the stories, the decor had everyone fascinated.
- Queen Mary’s Dolls’ House was a huge hit; It felt like she really set the bar high with her collection and my little one was amazed at the tiny furniture and rooms.
- You can also see the mini version of change of Guards here at 11 am on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays.
- There is a huge market right outside the castle with so many food and snack options to choose from which canoe great for brunch or late lunch.
The castle is huge, so I recommend wearing comfortable shoes and keeping a stroller for younger kids if needed. The open grounds outside the castle are perfect for a quick photo with the Long Walk in the background.
Travel Tips for Families
- Pack snacks & water – the coach ride is long and stops are limited.
- Dress in layers – the UK weather changes quickly, even in summer and always carry Umbrella
- Bring a stroller – Windsor has hills, and Bath has cobblestones.
- Take advantage of free audio tours – Stonehenge & Windsor’s audio guide is a hit with kids.
Our Takeaway
This Golden Tours day trip was one of the best ways for our family to explore royal history, ancient mysteries, and Georgian architecture all in a single day. My kids loved every stop from the grandeur of Windsor Castle to the mysterious Stonehenge stones and the charm of Bath.
