I recently visited Cebu to witness the annual lighting of a 35-foot Christmas tree at the Atrium of NUSTAR Resort Cebu. The towering symbol of hope was beautifully decorated with seashells, corals, seahorses, and other sea creatures in various shades of blue, pink, and gold.

When the lights illuminated, it felt as if the atrium transformed into the depths of the ocean. For one enchanted evening, guests and spectators were transported from Cebu’s vibrant coastline into a shimmering underwater world—complete with bubbles of light, cascading gold confetti, and gigantic stars that glowed like underwater pearls.
At the heart of this transformation stood the resort’s grand centerpiece: a Christmas tree unlike any other. Inspired by the ocean floor, the tree featured sea-creature motifs, coral-shaped baubles, and luminous shells. Its topper —a giant starfish —perfectly matched the theme—”Pearl of the Holiday Season.” Families, couples, and visitors gathered around, their faces aglow in the twinkling lights, raising their smartphones to capture the spectacular sight.
The Tree-Lighting Ceremony: A Moment to Remember
As twilight deepened, the formal lighting ceremony began. Key figures from NUSTAR Resort Cebu took the stage, gave short remarks, and called on their “Star Bearers”—local achievers, young talents, and community champions—to place symbolic stars on the tree. Each star represented one of the resort’s core values: Love, Hope, Peace, Joy. When the final star was placed, the lights on the tree exploded into a choreographed sequence of soft blues, greens and silvers—colors drawn from the sea’s palette.
“Every year, this celebration gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect; to celebrate how far we’ve come, and to remind us of what truly matters. This year’s theme, “Pearl of the Holiday Season,” holds a special meaning for all of us,” said Mr. Sean Knights. “The pearl is born through time, pressure, and transformation. From something ordinary comes something radiant: a symbol of beauty, strength, and grace. In many ways, it mirrors our story as a community and as a resort. Cebu, like the pearl, continues to rise with resilience and shines brighter with every challenge it overcomes.”
NUSTAR, now in its fourth year, continued its beloved Installation of the Stars, symbolizing love, joy, peace, hope, and the shared aspirations of Cebu’s community. This year’s star bearers were children from The Children of Cebu Foundation, Inc. (TCCFI), the resort’s chosen beneficiary. Mr. Knights placed the final New Star, representing Cebu’s optimism for the future. The glowing tree now stands at the heart of the resort’s festivities, reflecting NUSTAR’s dedication to spreading hope and joy throughout the season.
As the tree lit up, it resembled a giant bioluminescent coral—applause erupted, cameras flashed, and pure joy filled the room. Children gasped in delight, and guests cheered. For many, this event signaled the official start of the holidays in Cebu, with the resort setting the standard for festive elegance and imagination.
A Pearl of Generosity
NUSTAR, through its philanthropic arm, the Universal Cultural Foundation Inc. (UCFI), has shown its commitment to social responsibility by supporting The Children of Cebu Foundation. This initiative will not only provide essential funding for facility repairs and the acquisition of new state-of-the-art equipment, but also aims to transform the physical environment into a safer, more welcoming, and nurturing space. More than 30 children who reside in or temporarily stay at the foundation will benefit from these improvements, ensuring they have access to a supportive environment for their personal and educational growth.

A Pearl of Celebration: A Holiday Season Anchored in Magic
NUSTAR’s hotels and dining venues are hosting a season full of festive experiences. Xin Tian Di presents the Prosperity Trio—Stir-Fried Lobster Slippers with Ginger and Scallions, Stir-Fried Abalone with Trio Mushrooms and Asparagus, and Patatim with Steamed Buns—alongside Prosperity Feast Set Menus, available on December 24, 25, 31, and January 1.
Il Primo features five-course Christmas and New Year menus, optional wine pairings, and an al fresco New Year’s Eve celebration.
Mott 32 offers seasonal lunches and festive six-course menus paired with Prosecco or champagne. Axis Entertainment & Sports Bar hosts themed nights with feast bundles and signature cocktails.
Meanwhile, Fina and Huangdi highlight seafood and six-course family menus, respectively.
Throughout December, Fili Café serves daily festive buffets, with special offerings for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. The NUSTAR Lobby Lounge offers the Festive Delights Afternoon Tea with sparkling wine. From November 24 to December 31, the Fili Lobby Lounge’s Christmas Treats Corner features handcrafted chocolates and elegant hampers.
With the tree lighting ceremony complete, NUSTAR Resort Cebu has launched its season of festivities. Guests are treated to immersive decorations, themed menus, live performances, and interactive installations—all celebrating the underwater motif. This décor remains throughout the holidays, offering a photo-worthy setting for guests to enjoy their visit.
For both locals and travelers, the event provided more than just a light display—it created a memorable experience. As one guest shared: “It felt like Christmas took a dive.”
