In November last year, SEGA announced that a new entry in the Virtua Fighter franchise is in development by RGG Studios, the studio behind the Like a Dragon series.
After the announcement, we got a trailer that looked insanely good that some pointed out isn’t really gameplay.
Today, SEGA changes that, as we get our first official gameplay of the new Virtua Fighter project, which SEGA hasn’t titled Virtua Fighter 6 for some reason.
New Virtua Fighter Project Gameplay Brings More Grounded Fighting Styles
As you can see from the gameplay, SEGA and RGG isn’t buckling down to trends, as the new Virtua Fighter sticks to its roots on a more grounded fighting game. We don’t see any bombastic combos or supers, which is what the game is all about. Ever since, the Virtua Fighter series has been known to reward counter-attacking, a deep understanding of your character’s pokes and punishes for whiffed attacks.
The good thing about this reveal is how SEGA just directly goes into the gameplay. There’s no elaborate CGI intro or anything of the sort. Just put two characters in a training area and duke it out.
Aside from what was shown, there’s not a lot of info revealed. However, that should change next month, as the trailer confirms the game will be present at Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2025.
Tokyo Game Show will run from September 25 to 28, and chances are, we’ll see another gameplay reveal then. Perhaps an official title and release date as well?
Aside from Virtua Fighter, another surprise reveal at Evo is the announcement of the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls closed beta, which kicks off next month.
Fighting game fans have a lot to look forward to in the future with these two titles. Personally, I’m pumped to play a new Virtua Fighter game given it’s a slower-paced fighter that doesn’t have you memorizing dozens of combos in order to be effective.
