How to Beat the Octopus Boss

It is not a Hideo Kojima game if it does not have a boss with weird tentacles, right? Luckily, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach fulfills this charming requirement in Episode 3: Drawbridge.

An enormous octopus machine is the second major boss in the main story of the game, but it is the first true challenge Sam faces on his journey (no offense, Big Head BT), so you have come to the right place to find the best strategy to defeat it.

Let us not waste more time and get to the guide that shows how to beat Order 12, in Episode 3, which consists of defeating the Octopus Boss.

How to Prepare for the Octopus Boss

After unlocking the Musician, Sam’s next stop in the main story is connecting West Fort Knot to the chiral network, but the city has a little surprise: a mandatory boss.

So, start preparing yourself for the battle in the Musician’s terminal, while organizing your loadout for the mission. Your way over there has no surprises, so you can leave all construction items behind – such as ladders, PCCs, and climbing anchors – since their weight can slow you down and limit your movements in the middle of the battle.

That said, make sure you have one Battle Skeleton equipped, and fabricate two Machine Guns [MP] and three Blood Bags to bring with you. No need for grenades or shotguns, since our strategy is going to be long-distance.

Also, Sam was busy with a couple of rough deliveries before unlocking the Musician, so check his health and energy – if they were not full, replenish them by using Blood Bags and drinking from the Canteen.

Attack & Weakness Breakdown

The Octopus Boss can be a little annoying because he has many giant tentacles that are constantly trying to hit Sam, which limits your space to dodge and run. The good news, though, is that once you dominate his weak points, he is basically done for.

But first, let us understand his modus operandi. He is actually a robot covered in tar – a new kind of tech in Death Stranding’s universe – and has two phases, but with only minor differences between them.

Make Sam the best Porter across the globe!

In the first one, he stays floating and uses the three tentacles from one side of his body to attack, showing off his enormous size.

In the second phase, he stays closer to the ground, and his side attacks are way more aggressive. These attacks also have variants at this point: a charged one with three tentacles (which can be easily identified since he shrinks himself), and a quicker hit with just one.

Fortunately, his weaknesses are extremely visible, thanks to his joints and the huge engine on his back, which both glow red.

How to Beat the Giant BT

I know he is an imposing figure, but no need to run, no need to hide – our guide is completely reliable and infallible.

In his first phase, the best strategy is to ALWAYS keep moving in the opposite direction to his attacks, and you can predict it by how he moves his tentacles.

Do not try to climb any car or structure in the area, just keep a safe distance and use your Machine Gun [MP] to shoot at his joints without mercy.

Try to focus on one tentacle at a time until it is completely destroyed, which gradually tears the octopus machine apart, consequently weakening it.

In his second phase, beware, because the boss is much quicker, so dodge (aim + push “X”) the opposite way whenever it is necessary – he always shrinks before attacking, so pay attention to his moves – and do not waste time shooting at his weak spots.

Repeat the strategy until you have defeated it. If you have good aim, two Machine Guns should do the trick, but you can always look for shadowy figures from other players in the tar to grab more weapons in case you run out of ammo.

Battle Rewards

Death Stranding 2 On the Beach Octopus Robot Boss Rewards

Congrats! You defeated the Octopus Boss and have received… not much, unfortunately.

Your main reward is to finally get to connect West Fort Knot to the chiral network, unlocking the Floating Carrier Lv1, which actually becomes an important piece of equipment from now on. Oh, and you also made this post-apocalyptic world a little safer.

Besides that, you also win 20 Memories for APAS Enhancements and some points in “Combat” and “Bridge Link” on Sam’s porter grade. Oh, and more than 900 likes if you get rated as Rank S.
