Ghost of Yotei: Best Armor Sets

Across many open world RPGs, gear and armor in general are staple elements that determine your buildcrafting potential or just how far your character has progressed so far.

And with Sucker Punch’s Ghost Of series, it’s a fairly linear style, since both games so far don’t lean too heavily on the RPG elements, which also corresponds with the armor and gear, too.

In this list, we’re taking a look at Ghost of Yotei and the best armor sets it offers, with my ranking mainly based on their overall appearance, stats, and viability towards a strong build.

8

Nine Tail Armor

Maximum Style Points

How To Get

Found as a reward during the Blood on the Snow quest in the Kitsune’s main questline.

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • Quickfire weapon damage and duration of status effects inflicted on enemies are increased by a moderate amount.
  • Assassinating enemies has a minor chance of granting 2 quickfire ammo.
  • Enemy detection speed and assassination noises are reduced by a moderate amount.

I’m starting off with the Nine Tail Armor that you can get midway through your hunt for the Kitsune in the Teshio Ridge region. Although it gives you a hefty amount of stylish points, I’m not a huge fan of the perks.

The latter two perks are great for a stealth build, but I found the Crimson Kimono better in that regard, plus it is my preferred fashion choice.

However, if you’re someone who loves to spam the quickfire stuff, such as the Kunai or even the Smoke Bombs, you can take this into consideration since it fulfills that niche playstyle.

Taro’s Armor

Playing it Safe

How To Get

Automatic reward when you meet and rescue Taro the Scavenger.

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • All spirit gains increased by a moderate amount when graced with a cooking bonus.
  • Maximum health increased by a moderate amount.
  • Fire and Cold damage reduced by a major amount.

If you wanted an armor set that mainly has a defensive set of perks, then look no further than Taro’s armor, given to us by our mischievous little grave robber himself.

To take full advantage of this set, make sure you’re actively refreshing your cooking bonus by resting at camp and eating a meal, because other than that, the other two perks of the max HP increase and fire/cold damage being reduced don’t feel as potent as you’d expect.

With the low variety of sets even available in this game, I’d even go as far as to say this is a great armor to get you through the early-to-midgame sections in Ghost of Yotei.

Bounty Master

The Perfect Parry Crutch

How To Get

Bounty Target: Defeat Soma the Condemned

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge windows are increased by a major amount, but regular parries are disabled.
  • A Perfect Parry enables 3 additional counterattacks.
  • All spirit gains are increased by a massive amount.

An armor set that I find arguably great for anyone who struggles with the combat or the duel boss fights in this game is the Bounty Hunter set.

This set mainly increases your perfect parry and dodge windows at the cost of removing the regular parries. Furthermore, getting a perfect parry also allows you to dish out 3 counterattacks, which are especially helpful when in a duel or just mowing down an elite enemy.

The only downside is that I much prefer the regular parries being available to me. Moreover, the fashion choice of this armor set, even when fully maxed out, is questionable to say the least. But hey, if you love it, that’s fine. This is just my subjective ranking for this one.

5

Mercenary Attire

Doesn’t Overstay Its Welcome

How To Get

Obtained during the Belly of the Beast quest in the Oni’s main questline.

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • Thrown Melee weapons deal increased damage by a moderate amount and grant a moderate amount of spirit.
  • Assassinating an enemy has a guaranteed chance of dropping Sake.
  • Drinking Sake grants a major amount of additional Spirit.

I could immediately tell the favoritism for this armor set from the developers, or at least presume that due to the amount of dyes available for it. But hey, the Mercenary outfit is cool, despite it having some questionable niche perks.

Despite having the moniker of a ‘Mercenary’, this armor encourages you to utilize drinking the Sake bottles to maximize its potential. Every assassination, whether it be through stealth or smoke bombs mid-combat, will allow you to get a Sake replenishment.

You can then have Atsu drink her worries away and try not to get dizzy from the screen wobble effect from the drunken state.

If that’s not a concern, and you’re actively drinking Sake to your heart’s content during combat encounters, then go for this set. It’s nothing special, but at least it has drip points.

4

Onryo Armor

The Canon Outfit

How To Get

Starting Armor of the game.

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • Killing an enemy with a Spirit Attack or a thrown melee weapon has a moderate chance of Terrifying nearby enemies.
  • The wolf has a major chance to appear when enemies are Terrified.
  • Terrified enemies take increased damage by a major amount.

The Onryo Armor is your starting attire for the journey and is beautifully highlighted by the default yellow dye that perfectly replicates the iconic yellow jumpsuit of the Bride in Kill Bill Vol 1.

It is also one of the coolest armor sets in the game, and I don’t mean that just in the fashion sense, but also in the perks department. The Terrify effect is great if you want to try a different crowd control playstyle other than the Spider Lily Armor’s effects.

The only obvious downsides on the surface are that you’ll possibly need a decent set of Terrify-based charms to complement the armor, and to upgrade it, you’ll need to pursue the main storyline of hunting down the Yotei Six.

3

Spider Lily Armor

Stagger the World

How To Get

Reward for completing Mythic Tale: Spider Lily General.

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • Enemies have a moderate chance to drop throwable weapons.
  • Stagger damage inflicted by melee weapons increases by a moderate amount.
  • Staggering an enemy has a moderate chance of dealing moderate stagger damage to nearby enemies.

I’ll be honest, this is one of the only sets that I have the default appearance on because of the upgraded appearances overdoing the style, but I digress. The Spider Lily Armor is honestly one of the best crowd control armor sets in the game.

The first perk will increase the odds of getting a throwable weapon for some easy kills or staggers on elite enemies. And if you properly weapon align against the enemy, it’s a cakewalk to trigger their stagger break.

If you factor in the last perk, this is the cherry on the cake, since triggering the stagger break with nearby enemies will cause additional stagger damage to their posture.

It’s not anything game-breaking, but considering just how important stagger breaking is on higher difficulties, this is a valuable armor set in both stats and in the fashion department.

2

Crimson Kimono

Hidden in Plain Sight

How To Get

Reward for completing Mythic Tale: The Crimson Kimono

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • Chain Assassinations can be performed with Kunai (Max 2 Kunai thrown).
  • Enemy detection is reduced by a major amount.
  • Kusarigama assassinations can be unleashed from further away. The distance is increased by a major amount.

By far, one of my most used armor sets in the entire game was the Crimson Kimono, mainly due to the perks on display here. The first two are arguably great for stealth, since you can also use your Kunai during Chain Assassination animations to kill targets further away from you.

However, the third perk is what I consider the cream of the crop. The Kusarigama assassination is one of the best techniques available for this weapon.

And with how much you can increase the range via this perk, taking down distant enemies and pulling them towards you has never felt easier than with this weapon skill.

1

Armor of the Undying

Everything You Need

armor of the undying ghost of yotei

How To Get

Reward for completing Mythic Tale: The Undying Samurai

Perks (Fully Upgraded)

  • If weapon aligned, staggering enemies restores a major amount of health.
  • If weapon aligned, the window to perform Perfect Parry and Perfect Dodge is increased by a moderate amount.
  • If weapon aligned, Focus Attacks have a moderate chance to increase Stagger damage.

Weapon Aligned: The state of successfully matching Atsu’s weapon against the opposing one in battle, i.e., Yari>Kusarigama, Dual Katana>polearm.

The best armor set for me in Ghost of Yotei is the Armor of the Undying, since the perk combination incentivizes you to actively have proper weapon alignment when fighting foes, which you’ll be doing anyway to optimally stagger them.

Plus, I mean, come on. It is also one of the coolest sets in the game from a fashion standpoint if you combine it with Eijiro, the Ruthless’ mask.

It’s versatile for both crowd control fights and even duels, as boss fights can tend to switch up their weapons midway through, requiring you to constantly rock-paper-scissors between your weapons to (potentially) trigger their stagger break.

Most importantly, an increase to your Perfect Parry and Dodge windows is a freebie bonus that I’ll happily take, considering it doesn’t sacrifice my regular parries in the process.
