One of the biggest parts of Baldur’s Gate 3 is collecting wondrous magical items that will aid you on your journey. You have everything from mundane potions to legendary weapons and armor that will help you create the perfect class, whether you are playing as a fighter, bard, or wizard.
One of the more difficult items to obtain is Viconia’s Walking Fortress, as it is found in the last act of the game. However, the wait is well worth it, as this is one of the more powerful shields you can get your hands on.
Let’s break down how to get Viconia’s Walking Fortress in Baldur’s Gate 3.
What is Viconia’s Walking Fortress in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Viconia’s Walking Fortress is a legendary shield with some mighty bonuses, making it perfect for heavily armored classes, such as Paladins, Clerics, and Fighters. Unlike most shields in the game, this one has a +3 bonus to armor class.
This shield comes with the Rebuke of the Mighty ability, allowing you to use your reaction whenever an opponent hits you to knock them prone. Using this ability also deals 2-8 force damage to the target.
On top of this, Viconia’s Walking Fortress has the Spellguard ability, granting you advantage on saving throws against spells. This ability also makes it so spell attack rolls have disadvantage against you.
Finally, this shield gives you the Warding Bond spell and Reflective Shell class action. Reflective Shell allows you to reflect projectiles back to their point of origin, while Warding Bond allows you to give an ally resistance, increasing their armor class by +1.
The only downside to the Warding Bond spell is that you take damage whenever your ally takes damage, so it is important to use this ability wisely so that you both don’t go down.
Where to Find Viconia’s Walking Fortress in Baldur’s Gate 3
Viconia’s Walking Fortress is obtained as part of the Daughter of Darkness questline. This is the main questline for Shadowheart, so if you haven’t been paying attention to her quest, it may be too late to obtain this item.
Leading up to the ending of her quest, you will be guided to the House of Grief in the northwest corner of Baldur’s Gate. Once you have entered the building, you will speak to Mirie and take the Mapping of the Heart test.
After all is said and done, a secret stairwell will be revealed, allowing you to enter the Shar Temple. Here, you will encounter Viconia DeVir, the NPC with the shield you are after.
As part of the quest, you will end up fighting the followers of Shar in the Cloister of Sombre Embrace. This is a very difficult fight, so I recommend saving before it is initiated. This way you can reload should things go wrong.
For this fight, I recommend having a Cleric on your side, which, if you have Shadowheart, she should be a Cleric herself, as this is her best class.
Provided you have reached 12th level, you will have access to Divine Intervention, which can save your life during this fight. I needed to use the ability to heal all of my allies.
Once the dust has settled, locate Viconia’s body and loot it. She will have Viconia’s Walking Fortress shield in her loot. From this point on, you will have one of the most powerful shields in the game at your disposal.
