The Righteous Gemstones May Have Ended, But Danny McBride’s HBO TV Show Domination Isn’t Over

Even though HBO’s celebrated comedy series The Righteous Gemstones is over after four seasons, Danny McBride is still delivering great content for the platform. McBride, who has starred in and created several HBO original comedies, such as Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, and The Righteous Gemstones, is considered one of the greatest minds in TV comedy.

Following The Righteous Gemstones season 4 finale, which was released back in early May 2025, McBride has yet to appear in another notable TV show or movie. It may surprise some viewers to know, however, that McBride is also a sharp horror movie writer, with credits on the recent Halloween reboot trilogy and 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer.

McBride may be taking some time off from being in front of the camera on HBO projects, but he is still working his magic behind the scenes. Season 2 of It’s Florida, Man, which McBride is an executive producer on, is currently in development after being renewed back in October 2024.

Although McBride doesn’t star in It’s Florida, Man, he still has a degree of creative oversight as an executive producer that is felt in the comedy series. The show is created by Mark Herwick and Jeff Tomsic, who have collectively produced many comedy specials for comedians such as Brett Goldstein and Illana Glazer.

It’s Florida, Man features several notable comedic actors such as Simon Rex (Poker Face), Anna Faris (Scary Movie), Jon Gries (The White Lotus), Jake Johnson (New Girl), Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Stephen Root (Barry), and even Righteous Gemstones alums like Scott MacArthur.

Season 2 of It’s Florida, Man would be a great time for Danny McBride to finally make a cameo now that The Righteous Gemstones is officially over. He would join a great comedic cast and could perhaps take on a bigger role in the series as producer and actor.

Since McBride has had a history of starring in TV shows he’s produced in the past, it seems more than likely that he will appear at least for a cameo in It’s Florida, Man season 2. The entire first season of It’s Florida, Man, which consists of seven episodes, is available to stream on HBO Max.

While It’s Florida, Man is certainly no replacement series for The Righteous Gemstones, and may not be as all-around funny, it’s still worth checking out for any true Danny McBride fan. It earned a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics comparing the show to Drunk History while solely taking aim at the state and culture of Florida.
