With Thor Dead, Marvel Just Paved the Way for This Hero to Become Its Mightiest God

Warning! Major spoilers for The Immortal Thor’s finale ahead!Marvel Comics has officially killed Thor, setting up a new ruler for the nine realms that still remember the Norse gods. Despite their apparent redemption, Loki murdered Thor for reasons still unknown. This time, Thor’s death is definitive, and he isn’t even destined to rest in Valhalla afterward.

In The Immortal Thor #25, written by Al Ewing, the God of Thunder finds himself in an unfamiliar afterlife. There, Thor meets three entities who provide him with nine truths that hint at his future and the future of his family and kingdom. Thor now begins a new journey as a regular human being on Midgard in The Mortal Thor, but the rest of the realms still need a leader.

Thor Has Left The Door Open For Another Hero To Take His Place

Thor’s Death Has Shaken Asgard’s Power Rankings

Thor’s death leaves a dangerous power vacuum in Asgard. While Sif and the Warriors Three are prepared to handle military and civic matters, and Heimdall has been restored to his post guarding Asgard, Asgard and the other eight realms still connected to Thor’s homeworld require a new Thor figure. Har, Jafnhar, and Thridi confirmed to Thor that Odin is dead and settled in Valhalla. Without Thor and Odin, Asgard must choose a new king.

Now, Asgard finds itself with all major players gone and travel between realms disrupted

Unfortunately, Skurge gave his life destroying the Bifrost and the Black Bridge. Having slain Thor, Loki has also disappeared, seemingly in pursuit of a mortal life alongside the merged Sigurd Jarlson. Frigga wants nothing to do with Asgard, and Angela is busy attending to her own matters as well. Now, Asgard finds itself with all major players gone and travel between realms disrupted.

While Jane Foster could return to wield Mjolnir, Marvel is unlikely to retread old ground with her time as the Mighty Thor. The mantle’s next bearer will likely be a new or long‑underused figure. Whoever steps up must also fill the symbolic role Thor embodied as protector of Asgard’s honor and a bridge between its people and the rest of Yggdrasil’s worlds.

Other candidates to replace Thor as the leader of the Nine Realms include the all-seeing Sif, Brunnhilde, and even Doctor Strange, who now finds himself stuck in Asgard with no way back home. Angela, whose ties to Heven could extend Asgard’s influence, could also be a strategic choice. Yet none combine Thor’s bloodline and might quite like Magni.

Magni Is A Strong Contender To Carry Thor’s Legacy After Odinson’s Death

Thorson Inherited Thor’s Might In An Alternate Future

Immortal Thor #17, Thor is reunited with his son Magni

Magni’s alternate‑future feats make him more than capable of carrying Thor’s legacy in nine of the ten realms. Not only is Magni worthy of wielding Mjolnir, but he’s the Asgardian God of Strength, destined to be physically stronger than his father. During The Immortal Thor, Magni proved himself in battle against foes like Mister Hyde and Grey Gargoyle.

Magni comes from the alternate future of Earth-3515, where Thor created a utopian New Asgard on Earth.

As seen in Thor: The Reigning, Magni’s upbringing on Earth‑3515 gave him firsthand insight into what a utopian Asgardian rule can achieve, as well as the dangers it must avoid. Raised in a realm where Thor had conquered Earth and merged it with Asgard, Magni saw a prosperous realm defined by order and abundance. However, he also witnessed stagnation and complacency. These lessons could make him a wise ruler in Earth-616’s Asgard.

Magni demonstrated sound judgment in choosing his own path after his arrival on Earth-616. However, Amora the Enchantress is ready to strike. If Magni claims Asgard’s highest throne, she might siphon his power and kill him. So, while Enchantres’ selfish support may help Magni earn a permanent spot on Asgard, Magni’s sheer strength may be used against him and the entire realm.

Magni Could Be Marvel’s Next God Of Thunder, But Perhaps Not On Midgard

Midgard Now Has Its Own God Of Thunder, Who Might Beat Magni To The Title Of Thor’s Successor

The Nine Realms, now including Heven but not Midgard, would likely welcome a ruler descended from both Thor and Odin. Magni offers continuity of divine lineage, but also a new beginning untainted by Odin and Thor’s mistakes. With Thor gone and Asgard in need of stability, a warrior‑king in Magni’s mold could unify the realms under a familiar yet forward‑looking banner.

It’s possible that Bill, Magni, and even other heroes like Thunderstrike and Throg will share Thor’s duties temporarily

The Immortal Thor #25 reveals that Beta Ray Bill has replaced Midgard’s memories of Thor, all the way back to the Avengers’ first team-up. As a founding member of the Avengers, Beta Ray Bill may now serve as Thor’s replacement, at least on Earth. Whether the memory wipe also affected Beta Ray Bill or not is yet to be confirmed.

There’s a chance Beta Ray Bill could be Thor’s full-time replacement across the Ten Realms. However, the fact that the Korbinite hero has appropriated Thor’s entire superhero career on Earth suggests otherwise. Hence, it’s possible that Bill, Magni, and even other heroes like Thunderstrike and Throg will share Thor’s duties temporarily.

Magni’s Time On Earth-616 May Be Cut Short

Thor Will Recover His Godhood Sooner Rather Than Later

Beta Ray Bill becomes a founding member of the Avengers in The Immortal Thor

Magni’s time as Thor’s successor would inevitably be short-lived, as The Immortal Thor’s ending directly sets up the upcoming The Mortal Thor run. In traditional Marvel Comics fashion, this kind of drastic shift rarely lasts long. For now, Sigurd Jarlson must get acquainted with his mortal identity, but it’s only a matter of time before the God of Thunder returns to reclaim his mantle.

Marvel history is filled with examples of status quo reversals. Both Superior Iron Man and Superior Spider-Man inevitably led to Tony Stark and Peter Parker recovering their original identities and physical appearance. Hulk endured the horror of Al Ewing’s own The Immortal Hulk. While he’s still dealing with the aftermath, Hulk now enjoys freedom from the Below-Place. Likewise, Thor’s time away from godhood will almost certainly be short.
